The Killer, a baldish 33' year-old muscleman from Idaho, won two thirds of the batting triple crown when he led the majors with 49 home runs and 140 runs batted in. A key figure in the victors of the Twins in the Western division, he played in all 162 games and willingly shifted from third base to first base depending on the opposing pitchers and the strategy of manager Billy Martin.

The big fellow's career almost ended in the 1968 All- Star game in the Astrodome when he ruptured a hamstring muscle while stretching to make a play at first base. He worked hard during the off season and still had some trouble in spring training at Orlando, Fla. The fact he did play every game and even stole eight bases attested to his value. Killebrew hit .276, an increase of 66 points over 1968, walked 145 times and stuck out 84 times. Baltimore's pennant winners had several contenders for the honors.

Probably the most outstanding were Frank Robinson, who has won the MVP in both leagues Cincinnati in 1961, Baltimore in 1966, and Boog Powell, the Orioles' hulking first baseman. Mike Cuellar, whose 23 victories topped the league, also had to bo considered along with a brilliant Paul Blair in centcrfield. Robinson hit .308, slammed 32 homers and knocked in 100 runs. Powell topped Robby in homers and RBI with 37 and 121 while hitting .304. Big Frank Howard, the Washington slugger who hit 48 homers and knocked in 111 runs, also had to be in contention.

Hondo boosted his average to .296, an increase of 22 points over 1968, and played in 161 games. Boston also had at least one strong candidate in Rico Pe- irocelli, the 26-year-old shortstop, who surprised with 40 home runs, 97 RBI and a .297 average. The 40 homers broke the late Vern Stephens' American League record for most homers by a shortstop. Rico also tied "Phil Rizzuto's record for fewest errors in 150 or more games. His previous home run high was 18.

Reggie Jackson, Oakland's exciting home run hitter, rolled along ahead of Roger Maris' and Babe Ruth's pace in early season and wound up with 47 homers and 118 RBI despite a late slump. Sal Bando of the A's also was a factor in keeping the club in the race in the West with his 31 homers and 113 RBI. McLain came back with 24 victories and nine defeats and was given an outside chance to repeat.
