HelttWu. feome two years ago the wholesale grocery and dry goods store of Messrs. Shaw 4 Kurtz. atConntllsviUe, Fajette countv, was entered by burglars and robbed of in money. The safe was drilled through and blown open with powder, after which the iron box containing the rnobey was unlocked and rifled of of Its contents.

The next morning, when the store was visited and the robbery discovered, the proprietors conclnded to employ a well known Pittsburgh police officer who waa living there at that time, and who had served under Mayor Weaver and Mayor Lowry. He was not then In the police business, but the gentlemen who had been robbed presumed that bis experience as a detective would be valuable in assisting them to discover tn robbers. Tbe officer accompanied them to the stoie. and after viewing the premises gave bis opinion as to bowthe -job" had been man tged. vi mj Ferreting out the thieves.

and finally instrumental Rasing the Arroii a tiiaoKuiniiu on charge of having committed the theft. K-l- convicied and where he still bins was tried at i sentenced to the Penitentiary, rer2in'iSweeks since. Bobbins made a confession in wblci The not only Implicated t.le ex-officer in the burglaiy, but alleges that he ilrst niannedit and afterwards assisted in its execution He stated that the ex-ortlcer called upon him, at bis shop, and ordered certain tools, wbit-b were made as directed: that be subsequently informed Bobbins what he intended to do with tbe tools, and induced him and a third party to enter Into the arrangement to rob the store. Tney went about their work and it was successfully accomplished. Bobbins states that.

In working at tbe safe, the ex-officer cut one of his hands at tbe base of tbe thumb, and that the wound bled profusely. After securing the money, the tools which they used were put intothe iron box, which was locked up and thrown into the Youghlogheny ver. The statement was so circumstantial that, when it was communicated to Messrs. Shaw Kui tz, ihm froriv talked about it. They also search ed for the box ami found it in the river, at the spot where Robbins said it bad been thrown in.

Tbe ex-officer, learning that his name was being coupled with the Jelony entered suit against Messrs. Shaw A Kurtz, for slander, and tbey gave ball for trial. The next step in this ralher singular case, was a suit against the ex-officer for burglary. He was sued before a Justice of the Peace, at Connellsville, and was arrested in this city, a few davs ago, and entered ball for trial, in the snm ot S-ik, before one of our Aldermen. Thus the case stands at present.

The ex-officer, who is thus implicated in so heinous a crime, has always maintained a fair reputat ion, and was one of our best police otll-cers having been employed ahoot the Mayor office for a number of years. He denies, tn Ulo tbe statement of Bobbins, and claims that it is made through a spirit of malice and revenge. On the other hand, the prosecutors believe that they have sufficient evidence to corroborate Robbins confession. Xbev state that when, the morning afrer tne robbery, they went to consult witu ttex-flicer. be was brushing the dust from bis boots, tbey also perceived a cut on his band, which had been bleedimr.

Thor .1 expect to prove that, previous to the robbery tbe accused was without means, and ih.r alter he opened a tobacco store In Connelis- me. The ex-policeman, who returned to this cltv over a year ago, und Is now residing here, baa summoned several respectable witnesses to testify as to his character lor honesty, and 1 here are scores who would gladly do so. Indeed, nothing but strong evidence would fore his iriends to an opposite belief. I'M'KOVOKED ASSAULT. A Stan Attacked en tain own Doorstep.

A most unprovoked anil outrageous assault, if the statements made in regard to tbe matter at the Mayor's office yesterday are correct, was perpetrated Saturday evening on Second ave nue. To the rotcrt of AllrgKrnv Citizens: SometimeagoaTemper- ance and Reform Convention was convened in tbe tourt Ilonse, In the city of Pittsburgh, which unanimously nominated Isaiah Dickey. for the office of County Commissioner, to be voted for at the coming Octolwr election. That Convention was not political In Its char acter but was composed of men who felt tbt someining must oe uone. It possible, tbe ravages of intemperance among us. And as tbe execut Ion of the license law bas been pia-ea in tne nanus oi our onoty Comm sioners, aim as we t-it tbat those already bil- lng niai onice hail not carried out that law in lis t-pint and Intention, and as we were u-t persuaded that any candidate presented hv biiueroi tne political parties, would carry out lis provisions so as to Improve this stAte of tninifs.

we were constrained as law-atiitiiniz cii izens to nominaie a man wno is known to oe nonest ana reputaoie in tire, it Is prop-: to say that Mr. 1'ickeydid not and does no seek meomee. but only consents to the use of ms name in tne nope that II eleclei he may he instrumental In having our existing llrem. law fail hfuily and fully executed. Ills in sense the aim of the present movement to do away wun tne existing law; we recognize It as hi nil lug until annulled by tbe law matttn power of the state.

But we are persuaded llit it nas not teen properly We more over leei mat it wouui te to trie inferwt of men who vena araent spirits under the authority of a license to vote for Mr. 1'lckey. for whiie ne win not place htmseir in the attitude thit no licenses sria.it oe given wnue the law i-ou- miles, ne will see mat the cost or prncurimr a license shall not tw exrbittnt. Hence, if iaceti In the Board of Commissioners, we feel tbat it will be a decided benefit to all concerned. Mr.

Dickey is not before you as a politician, but as an independent temperance candldat-e. pledged to faithfully execute all laws that now exist or may exist tor the term of thrw. years. He Is not thrust upon your attention with any design to break up old political organizations, but we are determined to let it Is? understood tbat we will no longer biiuuiv follow the lead ot any political rlnir. a's lovers of cood order, as those profoundly lu-lerestrd in the well t-ltig of the county, we demand that men of character shall In-nominated for office, else we will not support them.

And are we not right in this? Isltnot high time tbat something should be done In this direction. Might not the election of Mr. Dickey be of incalculable benefit in the hereafter of our political history as a county? Therefore, fellow citizens, convinced that we have done right, we earnestly appeal to you. no matter to what party you belong, to aid ut in the election of Mr. Dickey.

We ask you to seriously consider the matter and give lis your influence and votes In the promotion of a tn-n to office whose Integrity is undoubted. We feel tbat yon owe it to yourselves and your families to at least make the trial. The woes of intemperance which have tseome so widespread in this community demand that something should be done, and that promptly, lest tbey be still more augmented and become quite nniverral. It is worth while sometimes to break off from party forthe sake of a specific object tbat is good, and in this case we feel that to do so wonld be honorable, right and praiseworthy. With us there is no scramhle tor tbe spoils of office, bnt an earnest and determined resolution to secure reform.
