Bond Market NEW YORK, March 2. (Special.) The bond market was fairly active but prices, except in a few instances, were In narrow limits. The Virgihia-Carolina Chemical issues were heavy, with the convertible 71.4s, with stock warrants attached, off 2 at the close from the earlier figures. The sinking fund 7s were steady. The Punta Alegre Sugar 7s were off a point at one time but rallied, again at the opening price.

The Missouri Pacific general 4s (Flood out among the railroad issues with a gain of 1. The Chicago and Alton wcro in demand and there was good sized trading in the Seaboard Air Line an Southern obligations and the Public Service 5s. The Liberty paper was irregular. The foreign securities were off .23 on the average price for 10 government issues. The general trend for the present seems quite sensitive to what Congress might do in the way of tax revision legislation and not much weight is apparently given at least at this time on the outcome of the pending oil investigation. Further evidence of the improvement that has taken place in tile, iron and steel trades was furnished by the resumption of-dividonds bn the common stoek of the Sloss-Shef field Company. Announcement of the passing of the Anaconda and Inspiration dividends brought pressure on the copper stocks during the week, tut rallied toward the close. On Friday the Northwestern rails became weak no doubt largely based on decreased earnings reports of the roads in that section and Northern Pacific made a new low of 48.

Other roads in general were. firm. Norfolk and Western advanced sharply on the report that Its directors and those of thj Pennsylvania have acted affirmatively on a plan to lease the former to the Pennsy Ivania and the large cash dividend which it is rumored the Norfolk and Western will soon declare. In general, the wheat market this week had a henvy undertone, the pressure being lifted on Wednesday due to traders taking profits in corn and purchasing However, mattered selling representing some long holdings took place on Thursday and weakness characterized the wheat market the balance of the time. Thevolume of trading was light and price changes were kept within a narrow range. Corn was strong and for the greater part active thruuerhout the week, but weakened at the opening on Friday and closed dow n.

On Tuesday 'Jul and September corn advanced to new high prices on the crop, and May reached its previous high. Uradstroet's estimates of available supply of grain for the week ended February 23. showed for wheat 73.193. OtiO bushels as contrasted with 54.343.000 bushels for the corresponding week of last year. Corn.

United States and Canada, 000 bushels versus 26.946.000 bushels last year. Irregularity, strength alternating with weakness, prevailed in the cotton market during the weeks On Friday morning cotton opened strong, selling up to 30.20 for then turned weak and sold off sharply, closing only moderately above the low prices of the week. Hesters spinners' takings this week were 165.000 bales as contrasted with 147,000 bales last week and 215,000 bales for the week corresponding to this week last year.
