financial problems plaguing basebaU Ray Grebey director of Player Relations Committee also testified that be is the sole spokesman for management in negotiations with the Players Association On the eve of the first owning of ma jor league owners since the baseball strike began 27 days and 339 games ago Grebey outlined his rote in negotiations am the spokesman for the Player Relations Committee Inc be said "There are no other spokesmen" Grebey was the only witness to take the stand Wednesday in the continuing National Labor Relations Board bear ing before Administrative Law Judge Melvin Welles The NLRB acting in behalf of the union has charged management with the unfair labor practice of bargaining in bad faith The labor board is seeking a ruling that management be forced to open its financial records in view of continuing statements by various owners on the economic plight of the game But Grebey testified that it is his im pression there is no financial problem in the sport industry or club financial pro blems were brought to my hesaid Grebey said that in negotiations with the players management has never claimed any or incapacity to pay" Grebey also denied any attempt to at tack the tree agent system tgecU are here io stay" be said are a benefit to baseball I know some people in management share that opinion but there is no intention or desire to attack the Grebey quoted Buzzy Bavasi executive vice president of the California Angels for an example of management philosophy in the area of compensation which requires a team signing a tree agent to surrender a replacement player That issue has caused the current strike Bavasi has said care who I have to give up as long as I get the player I want and pay him whatever he Grebey said The owners are pushing for direct compensation with a team signing a top quality free agent giving up a roster player in return The players who went on strike June 12 have proposed com pensation from a pool of players with each club contributing to the pool Grebey also dismissed the suggestion that Calvin Griffith president of the Minnesota Twins and Ruly Carpenter president of the Philadelphia Phillies represented management positions in public statements regarding baseball economics and Ruly are not spokesmen or members of the Board of Directors of the Grebey said comments were not cleared and there is no them losing $100000 for every game cancelled by the baseball strike The city of Visalia purchased a minor league franchise five seasons ago and Assistant City Manager Dick Anthony who acts as of the Visalia Oaks in the A rated California League said the municipal venture into pro sports has been a success goal was to get professional baseball back to the community The only goal was that ownership
