THE SECOND BKAT.

The second heat of the "4.V race was called after a lapse of twenty-five minutes, during which time the Great Western band afforded the spectators an opportunity to hear the strains of some of Offenbach's most lively airs. Fine days that promised well, and wretched wet nights, that damped all ardor In playgoers and rendered the players equally damp aud drooping. The fault was not theirs, and, next time they come. It Is to be hoped better atmospheric influences will compensate them, which they shall compensate with the production of a better play. To-night an event worthy of celebration tn the history of Pittsburgh theatricals Is announced. It is something not to be lightly regarded, that an original American comedy should be first placed upon the Btage In this city.

Heretofore authors have thought that no such experiment could Ims attended with success outside of New ork that the seal of that metropolis must prlmally be placed on it, and then Inferior towns most take it at the valuation thus obtained. Mr. Campbell has had the courage to take the test of Pittsburgh criticism for his starting point, and see thence an endeavor at portraying In comedy the manners of the period may not penetrate to other places and sold Its own against the clique supported writers of the day. His effort Is one that should be sustained. There Is pluck In It, and more than a supposition that there Is genuine literary ability to back it It would be a not inconsiderable triumph for him to surpass or even rival the Tialvs and Logans, who now leaI cap lnim--nn-it tn countrj mervbaiiU in china, g.ass soft u-osvi arts.
