32 The Birmingham Post THURSDAY October 21 1999 A SPORT In association with ootr SPORTS omission proof of incomplete county system teams are chosen almost exclusively from the quasi amateurs those who are in transit to the professional ranks Damned fine players all of them and they the proof that all those youth development schemes run so devotedly by all the counties are working? And we have to say that on the international front England have been extremely well served by the teams chosen It seems to me though that there is something incomplete about a system that can consistently overlook a golfer as good as Rob Maxfield who 12 years ago finished second among all the college golfers in the state of Florida Who has played for Staffordshire for 17 years since the age of 1 5 who has won the Staffordshire Open Championship the County Championship and the Staffordshire Boys Championship who reached the fourth round of the English Amateur Championship in the only year that he played in it And who has retained a plus-one handicap for 1 1 years Maxfield of course played his early golf on the verge of quasi amateurism In his youth he dreamed of becoming a professional and making vast fortunes why he went to America But playing tournaments he concluded was too frantic a life and having had the good sense and parental guidance to stay at school until he was 17 and achieve ten O-levels and two As he turned away from golf loved the he said do But 1 think I was selfish enough to make a go of it any more stressful competition than the English County Championship qualifiers and once a year in this cauldron Maxfield makes his point At Rothley Park this summer in the Midland qualifiers Maxfield shot 69 71 and was second best individual At Cavendish in the same event last year he shot 68 70 He has taken second place three times in this mind-crushing madhouse and his contribution is a reason why Staffordshire usually do so well And when he came in with his score at Rothley 1 overheard a county official ask this question: this bloke ever get picked for Why mdeed? Because Maxfield and several others I can think of in the Midlands plays the amateur game International There is as we all know amateur golf and amateur golf and while the one community of the sport is massively catered for in terms of Xsentative opportunity they is left to well just get on with the game And not that they mind This thought occurred when I bumped into Rob Maxfield golf operations manager at The Belfry this week Maxfield is one of the finest amateur golfers 1 have come across and it seems odd that his playing CV fails to reflect his prowess not sure that amateur golf outside the Walker Cup presents Rob Maxfteld: Good enough to play for England Inclement weather drives Hall to victory professionally There are things more important to me like my job and my family A lot of golfers amateur and professional will understand that and yet we still go back to the theme of this piece: why outstandingly good golfers who have a job and a family cannot play for England adore playing in says Maxfield I like to think I can always turn it on when I need to I always want to shoot good He also wants to pass on a word of advice to all those youngsters with stars in their eyes who can see their names on the leaderboard of life and nothing beyond them to stay at he said get their examinations out of the way first So many youngsters get left high and dry and very Gale carries Mercer on to opening win By EPPME MMffFITW The Birmingham Post Sedgley professional Garry Mercer has been striving for years to break the tag of an also-ran He came good at Penn yesterday when he and amateur Kieron Turner won the Geddes Alliance with a five-under-par round of 65 The duo will look back on the last hole of die day as their turning point It may only have produced a par four but it was the manner of the score that mattered Against a severe easterly wind Mercer hit two tremendous drives at this 463-yard hole and the ball finished on the fringe of the green from where he chipped dead and secured his par Before that he holed a putt of 1 5 feet at the first for a three hit the flag with a wedge shot to grab an easy birdie-two at the short seventh and played a two-iron to ten feet from where he holed for another birdie at the ninth At the 15th a 60-yard pitch gave him a putt of eight feet for a birdie three and then came the great finish at the 18th In between both he and Turner missed the green at the short 16th green and took four raising the hopes of the chasing pack The final hole lolled off any optimism however with Sapey duo Chris Knowles and Denis Skelp tying for second on 68 with all-amateur team of David Taylor and Stan Round Soto weigh in with Homed complaint Prince Naseem Hamed camp are sticking to a 2pm weigh-in time in Detroit today despite complaints from the handlers of WBC featherweight champion Cesar Soto The trainer Manuel Diaz argues that the weigh-in should be held three hours later to comply with the World Boxing Council rujes management believe that Hamed a big featherweight may be having difficulty making poundage and an earlier weigh-in will give the WBO champion extra time to resume peak strength before tomorrow fight Angel's delight A spectacular early goal by Marie Angel gave Albion Reserves a 1-0 victory over Wigan in the Pontins League Cup encounter at the Hawthorns The winger curled a 20-yard shot in off the Midland Professionals Championship On a bitterly cold day with die wind howling in all the way from die Urals the Rushcliffe-based pro carded a magnificent six-under 66 round the PGA National course to blow the rest of the field apart Although last winner Steve Webster had admirably put his big money ambitions in Belgium on hold to defend his tide even the European Tour star from Warwickshire was left standing by Hall who took everything the weather could throw at him to win by four strokes before cheerfully admitting: M1 loved it Every minute of Hall said: a bad weather Slot to pay for:
