section of epidemiology for the Louisiana State Department of Health One new case has been reported since figures were last released (May 14) bringing the total to seven eases for this year In 1057 for the same period there were 42 cuscs and 81 cases reported in 1056 Six of the seven eases were paralytic compared with 22 cases in 1057 68 cases in 1056 Dr Bruce said that these figures undoubtedly reflect the effectiveness of Salk vaccine He urged the public not to stop with one or two injections but to get the full series of three vaccinations for maximum protection Anyone regardless of age who normally is eligible for immunization may get polio shots at his parish health unit Dr Bruce reminded New Kitchenette Camps at Casa Loma Big Attraction Genial Mike Didicr has done it again come up victorious Innis High FFA Parliamentary Law team which captured the Louisiana championship last week oOo TIM TO MI Tors Il'MCRimOS Trade Schools Good Investment In a period' when jobs are less plentiful than before there still exists a need for skilled labor This is true both in Ih trades such as Auto Mechanics and Drafting and in the ranks of technicians in industry where highly trained engineers are often forced to do technician grade work bcause of the lack of skilled help The Farm Journal in its March 1058 issue reports on what vocational schools are doing to train boys and girls for useful trades This article is about the vocational school at Crowley and says that farm boys in that area are turning to the vocational or trade school to train for jobs that puy well While the article was written about the Crowley school the situation is the same throughout the entire state The same is true of the Memorial Area Vocational School in New Roads But the potential at all of the state Vocational Technical schools is greater than the schools are able to tap because of limited facilities and funds Here we have a tremendous need for trained skilled Workers and a school equipped to do the job Leg Funds Should Not be Cut We know that the state is pinched for funds and we know it already spends sizable amounts on the many vocational schools now in operation But think how much better off the state as a whole would be if there were increases in this kind of investment rather than in some programs which may help people financially but do nothing to make them better citizens or train them to perform better work and to be self-sustaining Somewhere we seem to have lost sight of the difference between on expenditure and an investment An expenditure is giving money which will help people out while an investment is spending money which will help the people benefited but which will also bring returns to the givers in this case the State of Louisiana It would appear to me that the trend should be in the direction of an investment rather than an expenditure oOo Soil Conservation Woodland Tour Slated June 26th A Woodland Tour sponsored by the Upper Delta Soil
