Peculiar Contract Alleged to Have Been Made to Avoid a Dumagf Suit. Attorney Thomas M. and Rody P. afar-shall brought a peculiar action yesterday on an old contract, alleged to have been mads by the Crescent Steel Company and Robert McDonald, superintendent of the works.

It was for a dollar a day contracted to be paid every day to JAzzie Cavanaug-h until her baby boy was 14 years of age. in lieu of a suit which she threatened to brin.ir for the death of hei husoand, Daniel Cavanaugh, at the works of the lirrn, where he was emnloyed aa a laborer. The door was beiner let down by hand ar.d Cavana-igh at first refused to assist in ihe woik. The super, intene'ent assured him, wife claims, tha- there was no danger and with that assurance he took an iron har and pro-ceeced to luwer it. The door slipped and fell on him, killing- him ir.stantiy, it is said. The wife was left with several small chillren and when she learned the cause of her husband's death went to th3 company officers iad told them that she waa goii to bring suit. They asked her not to Co so and she says they agreed to give her a dollar a day until her youngest child, then 1 year and 7 months of age war.

14 years old. The contract was one of the strangest ever made in lieu of a suit for darjages. and tne firm proceeded to pay the woman fls per agreement. The money wa3 puid vntil March. li.

Mary XI. Orecne, Formerly a Pilot, "ow Entitled to Command tt Steamboat. Mrs. Mary B. Greene, the wife of Capt.

Gordon Greene, commander of the well-known steamer H. K. Bedford, yesterday was examined as to her qualifications to command a steamboat. fr.e successfully underwent the rigorous examination prescribed by the government, and was given a license which entitles hsr to command a boat. She is the only woman who has evei been granted an original master's license by the Pittsburgh office.

The examination waa made by Capt. John M. Phiiiips. the government local inspector of hulls, and Capt. Gtorge H.

Atkinson, inspector of boilers, and the greater part of yesterday was consumed in asking and answering the necessary The examination was conducted in the inspectors' office in the federal building. At its conclusion a license which entitles her to command a vessel for rive years on the rivers in this section was given her. The license is to the effect that she has given satisfactory evidence to the inspectors that she is a skillful master of steam vessels and can be entrusted to perform such duties, and that she is licensed to act as such master on steam vessels for the term of live years. Mrs. Greene is a young woman, prepossessing in appearance and remarkably bright.

Her home is at Newport, but she end her husband pass the greater part of their time on board thv steamer 11. K. PedfCJ d. which nhes the rivers in this section. One year ago she wa.s examined as to her fiuaiificu for pilot, one of the- most difficult positions to fill I of all the commands on a steamboat, and was given a license to act aa sttoli.

being the first woman who was ever given l.cerse as a first-class pilot. Yesterday her Mcensse as pilot was extended to cover a period c-f five years. Previous to her application for a p' lot's license she had acted as assistant pilot to her husband lor a period of five or six years, and from her experience in the pilot house had com" to learn the rivers thoroughly. Jest whether Mrs. Greene expects to take charge of a steamboat could not be ascertained, but she is entitled to do so if she desires.

In fact her nnswrs to tho questions propounded her were above tho average in Intelligence. At any rate she will be in a position to be of great assistance to hei husband In ease cf emergency. Mrs. Greene is educated and above the average in intelligence, but she is nevertheless modest and unassuming, and one would never guess from her demeanor that she is one of the few women in the United States -whom tne government believes possesses the necessary knowledge and qualifications to command a steamboat. She is thorou hly posted on all the technicalities of steam vessel, and aduition has made up her mind just what she would do in certain dangerous emergencies.

In response to the question as to what she would do in cjise of a tiie on a boat she commanded she a.n-swered that the would instruct her pilot to land the boi. and, without anv undue excitement, have the pump put. to work and water thrown en the fire, Pud the passengers and crew awakened. In case she found her boat sinking she said she would try to get the boat to shore, and failing in that would get out all the smaii boats for the purpose of saving the passengers and crew. In case of a collision between her boat and another one she said she vvould be governed bv circumstances.
