"W T! * •*•; L.A. inspectors toss out spoiled food Associated Press LOS ANGELES-Following complaints by Negro groups, food inspectors are checking markets and restaurants in predominantly black areas of the city and throwing out hundreds of pounds of spoiled food. In the first seven days, 70 inspectors visited 939 stores and dumped 100 pounds of fruit, 290 pounds of vegetables, 536 pounds of meat, 40 pounds of fish, 58 pounds of poultry, 108 pounds of cereal, 54 pounds of canned and bottled foods and 30 pounds of packaged food. They ordered 655 markets to correct health hazards, most Involving uncleanliness. The food haul probably was low, a Los Angeles County Health Department spokesman said yesterday, because the sweep was ordered by county supervisors at a public hearing and so "nobody was caught unawares." He said a shortage of inspectors limits the department normally to spot checks. Kenold .Seaton, 49-year-old dental technician, organized the black coalition—called the Coalition of Community Groups— in September. "The prices are higher in our markets than they are in Beverly Hills and yet the food is inferior," Seaton said. "Some markets are supposedly cut rate, but what they're selling you wouldn't want to feed to a dog." When Seaton appeared before county supervisors to ask for the inspections, he spread out before them sickly looking portions of hamburger, hotdogs, ham and spareribs that he saidi he had just purchased. He said cockroaches were common at some markets. Another man said his grandson once had seen a rat in the meat section of a store and wouldn't eat meat again for a year. "There are some people who think you can dump anything you want in the black community," Seaton said. A health department official, Harry Klissner, said: "Where you have an educated public there's no problem. They insist on the best. But the poverty areas are liable to buy garbage."
