An*. 1«, 1970 Teachers don hard hats to iinish school construction By PAT SAfcO MESA — When the construction strike halted work on new classroom facilities for a private school here, the schoolmaster t r a d.e d his teaching tools for a hard hat. And he enlisted two members of his teaching staff, James Thompson and Hank Diulus, as helpers. Clark A. Cubley, headmaster of The Trivium academy, said he's not ordinarily a do- it-yourself person. "But we planned to open classes this fall in new facil- ities and, by golly, we will, even if it means working 24- hours a day until Sept. 9," he said. The three teachers took up hammers and saws to begin remodeling a shingle-sided old hoose at the 11-acre school site at 1556 N. Mesa Drive to provide storage space, classrooms artd offices. "If ouf other two teachers, Sally Smith and Joan Stone, were any good with a hammer and saw, we'd have drafted them for the project too." Cubley quipped. Skilled construction men started work last week on a cluster-type, four classroom block building for the September opening. "We need the extra room to accommodate our enrollment growth," Cubley said. The school opened last fall at 86 W. University with an enrollment of 60 students in grades 1-6. Paul Fannin, R-Ariz., yesterday was accused of contradicting himself by promising to "work vigorously" to keep in effect U.S. tariff regulations that permit American industry to move into northern Mexico. Darwin Aycock, secretary- treasurer of the Arizona AFL-CIO, said Fannin's statement Thursday in Sierra Vista contradicted his February report to Arizona which decried the trend of Americans "losing their jobs here in the United States to workers in other countries." "How Sen. Fannin can cite unemployment as perhaps the most urgent problem facing the nation in the coming decade," Aycock said in a press release, "and then throw his support to the 'twin plant' concept (of U.S. manufactur- ers having plants in the United States and Mexico) is astounding." Aycock said the "twin plant" concept works only to the advantage of American corporations and permits paying "slave labor" wages.
