He knows its strengths and weaknesses, its problems and its people. He knows what makes Chicago the "City that Works'.' Bilandic's fellow alderman recognized that by electing him acting Mayor. Other leaders and prominent citizens also recognize Mayor Bilandic's ability to keep Chicago strong. They know he'll continue Chicago's great- tradition of leadership--a tradition based on compassion and understanding of the people of Chicago and their diverse needs. Except for his tour as a marine officer in the Pacific during WWII, Bilandic has spent his entire life in Chicago. Re-elected in 1971 and 1975, he quickly rose to a position of leadership in the City Council.
