4-D THE BAYTOWIS SUN Thunday, December 2, 1982 La Porte To Buy Nine Fire, Police Vehicles By FRIEDA BEATY LA PORTE (Sp) — City Council has entered into an inter- local agreement with the Houston- Galveston Area Council to purchase nine city vehicles, seven of which will be police cars. Council Wednesday agreed to purchase the cars for $8,058.15 each from Charlie Thomas Chrysler Plymouth. Total expenditure is $72,523.35. Through cooperative bidding with the H-GAC, City Manager Jack Owen said the city could replace seven police cars and the fire chief and the fire marshal's cars and save about $800 on each vehicle. Owen says a basic staff car, without the police package would cost the city (8,845 so the purchase through H-GAC would provide the city a considerable savings. Council has budgeted over $70,000 for motorpool replacements. Council also approved the oversizing of a water line from an 8-inch to a 12-inch line to run about two miles from North L Street north to the Trammel Crow Distribution Center. The project is expected to cost an additional $68,450 to the $178,000 Trammel Crow agreed to pay to run the 8-inch line to their warehouse distribution site in the northeast corner of the intersection of Highway 225 and Underwood Road. City officials felt the oversizing will eventually save the city money in the long run when the area develops in the future. City engineer John Joerns says the over- sizing will more than double the carrying capacity of the line. "The land owners had the opportunity to participate in the oversizing and they chose not to," said Councilman Ed Matuszak. "In the future when they need the extra line they should have to provide the money for it. I think the financing is something that we do not have to do." Council also approved a $20,600 contract with Cahill and Stone for the renovation of the city's municipal swimming pool. Cahill and Stone is a Chicago-based firm and will begin the project within the month. Council approved the contract with the agreement that an inspector, furnished by the city, will oversee the pro- ject to guarantee its work. In other business, council entered into contracts with the Rohan Company, Golden Triangle and Water Supply Company, and the Utility Supply Company for water and sewer supplies. They should contact the building principal for assistance. If parents or other citizens find items they consider objectionable, they may fill out "citizen's request for reconsideration of a book" or "objectionable film" forms obtained from the principal's office. Also, books being considered by the state school board to be used by local school districts are available to parents or other interested parties at Region IV Education Service Center in Houston. Allen R. Lewis, coordinator of communications at Region IV, said the group using the library most extensively have been those who wish to make sure textbooks do not depict sexual stereotypes. All materials, books and films are chosen in accordance with Texas Education Agency guidelines, administrative and teacher judgment and "external input as is advisable and available," school officials say. Selection is geared to student needs, curriculum objectives and school district philosophy. Prior to purchase or classroom use, materials and supplementary books are approved by the subject coordinator and/or the building principal. From an approved list, films are received from Region IV. As stated in the district's procedure for effective utilization of films, a film found objectionable by a teacher is not shown to students. The teacher is to discuss the film with the principal and fill out an "objectional film" form, which the principal submits to the director of audiovisual and textbooks, who in turn notifies other schools that the film has been removed from use due to objectionable content. •7.
