About 28,000 U. S. prnple are killed each year In homr accidents, Too Many MIWM Pins After observing the many duck flocks resting on Alton Lake dur Ing their migration north, Pan Meyer of Edwardsville recalled ( hunting experience in the fall hack In the early 30's. He ran his outboard boat to the stump-infested waters near Scotch Jimmy Island; waded ashore nnd hid behind a tree. When ducks swum by, he stomped his feet and the ducks arose in flight for perfect targets. After bagging the limit, he began the return trip to shore but his boat had drifed fai Into the protruding and submerged stumps. Me claims that he used six feet of shear pins in the motor's propeller before he was able to run his boat, free of the obstruc tions. (Shear pins average about l j /i inches in length). Motor-boat Bill Opponent "The Madison County Federlion of Sportsmen's Clubs voted unanimously to oppose Rep. Frank C. Wolf's legislation bill which re stricts the operation of larger motorboats until noon on 'Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays", announced T. Brant Thornton, Federation chairman. The Federation has about 4,500 members in clubs at Alton, Edwardsville, Marine, Nameoki and 'Highland. The Highland Club was organized ^vo weeks ago and elected officers are C. D. Michaels president and 0. F. Huggen secretary-treasurer. Thornton and Henry Steward of Bethalto were delegates to the Illi nois Federation of Sportsmen's club southern conference at Crab Orchard Lake near Carbondale recently. The lake and surrounding area, comprising about 64,000 acres is.a federal game refuge. Good Fishing Site All delegates were taken on a tour of the refuge by Eugene Craw ford, U.S. Fish and Wildlife agent, and other conservation men. They were told that the area belonged to the public and was sustained by license fees. While visiting at Little Grassy Lake on the grounds, they saw' a four-pound crappie landed. Also, they saw many waterfowl. It was pointed out to the men that some sportsmen go to distant lakes to fish when they have equally as good places virtually in their own back yard. The delegates were shown the Devil's Kitchen project which was begun and abandoned before the war. A million dollars was spent in clearing an area and pouring huge concrete footings for a dam. The proposed lake would have been six miles long and three quarters of a mile wide and provide water for many nearby communities. An appropriation of three million dollars from the government is needed 1o finish the dam. The delegates were asked to wrile their congressmen and request that the project be completed. Open Hunting Season Although many persons associate hunting with the fall season, the law allows ground hogs and foxes to be hunted the year around. Three ground hogs were bagged by James E.
