You Can Make Muff Ensemble : By Mary Brooks Picken ' (Newspaper •Entorprlso Association) Muffs are important this season afifl they are flirtatiously feminine. Almost every type of fur is used, and of course the fake furs are popular because they are smart looking and cost so little, in comparison with real fur. All muffs tend to be small. Instead of using 20 inches for length as our diagram suggests, you may want to use only 15 inches. Many muffs By Mary Brooks Picken are as tiny as that. Fold the fabric over and see what size looks best for you. Cut to that size. Many smarties are making a ringlet of the fake fur instead of an ascot. This is 22 inches to 24 inches long, and 13 inches around. To make one, simply make a seam the long way of your Detail for muff and ascot. er separately, then securely sew a half-yard of very nice matching grosgrain ribbon 1- inch wide to the center of each end for tying. Or, make iWyour ringlet 28 inches long —make a complete tube, then stitch the ends together, leaving an opening large enough to turn the ringlet right-side- out. Whip the opening together and wear the ringlet up close to the throat in front, hanging in back, or wear it pulled to each side and to the neck in front and back. Cover with Fur Muff forms are available in many sizes. Buy one the size you want and cover it with your favorite fake fur. To make a muff and ringlet or ascot, buy % yards of fake fur. Straighten fabric. Lay flat, face-down. Chalk out muff and scarf following diagram. As ascot is reversible, you cut four lengths, shaping as indicated. Decide position of opening through which one end of scarf is drawn. Mark on one side, making slash 2'/4 to 3 inches long. Lay I'/a-inches strip right- side-down on right side of ascot. Stitch around the mark for slash as for a bound buttonhole. Cut between stitching lines. Draw facing strip through to wrong side and stitch around opening. Lay ascot pieces together wrong-side-out. Stitch edges all around, leaving a small opening along one side Muff-ascot ensemble. through which to turn. Clip corners. Press seams open. Turn right-side-out. Press. Whip opening closed. Cut Smaller Lining Cut lining of muff 3 inches smaller on tkoth edges than indicated fpr muff fabric. Liy cotton over v/rbng side of lining and tack In position.
