I '*> uuu **•*"*•"* Sophomore showdown slated Limits on drugs urged i n Hollywood Derby tuneup > Associated Press £$UN VALLEY, Idaho ;Kermit Alexander, a vice* •C t e a i d e n t of the National ifwtball League Players Association, urged doctors Friday to curb the prescribed $fugs that athletes can use to ary and gain a competitive jfflge. -| Alexander, a halfback for the Philadelphia Eagles, and » member of the NFLPA's safety committee, also urged coaches lo reduce the pressure they exert on players to perform beyond their capabilities, Such pressure, Alexander said, can lead to "all kinds of areas. The player will either break under that pressure or go to drugs to get extra help, whether it will help him or hot." Alexander appeared on a * |Pcnn State pulling out lot athletic conference Associated Press • STATE COLLEGE, Pa. ^Penn State is pulling out of -the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference because it feels "it is contributing morefinan- <cially to the 214-member organization than it's getting in -Services. V £ Athlitic director Edward M. ^Czekaj said Friday that •;ECAC Commissioner Robert jWhitelaw has been notified of iPenn State's decision to with- w effective July 1, 1974. The university's decision ^could be reconsidered, Czekaj jsaid, only if changes in ECAC ^policies governing finances Jand services produced tangi- jble results. These involve fi- Jnancial assessments, service ^policies, scheduling and over- fall finances. I Lopez retains {junor golf title 5 LAKE GENEVA, Wis. (AP) ,;>Nancy Lopez, 16, of Roswell, /'N.M., easily retained her ^Women's Western Golf Assp- Sciation junior championship ^.Friday by downing Lori Gar- vbacz, 14, of South Bend, Ind., v7-6. ,r • Miss Lopez played one over ; par jgolf for 12 holes on the vLake Geneva Country Club v course in beating the Indiana 5 junior .champion. In making the announcement, Czekaj said the decision was reached after a thorough evaluationof Penn State's athletic posture with its continuing goal'of providing national leadership in intercollegiate athletics. . "We feel, emphasizing our national position as a major independent enables us to be more effective in such leadership efforts," Czekaj said. Czekaj referred to the ECAC's opposition to reorganization of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, which Penri State favors and desires to play a leading role in formulating. A Penn State spokesman explained that the university felt it was putting in more than a fair share of money in the ECAC, as much as one fifth some years. "In spite of this," the spokesman said, "the ECAC is in deficit financing, and we feel it may get worse before it gets better. The services we are deriving aren't worth it." Penn State contributes to the ECAC 10 per cent of its national football television money and $1,000 plus 10 per cent of its bowl revenues. State in recent seasons has been a regular on national TV, and played in bowl games five of the last seven years. panel discussion at the annual convention of the 700-member Idaho Medical Association. Elaborating later on the remarks he made during the panel discussion, Alexander said professional athletes are part of the same drug problem that prevails elsewhere in the United States, and that a study should be made to see how serious the problem is. He said he knew of players being held out of games when it was feared they might be injured because of the amounts of legally prescribed drugs such as amphetamines that they had taken. "I think it's unfair to place the total burden on the athlete", Alexander said of the drug curtailment problem. "Also there's so much emphasis in high school, college and in the pros on winning, you have to utilize any kind of a crutch you can to gain an edge," he said. "It's no different than a housewife going to a doctor and saying she feels so bad she can't get her work done, and getting some medication, whether she really feels that way or not," he said. He said pharmaceutical companies and doctors should look for ways to eliminate accessibility of drugs. "It's much easier to prescribe a medication than itie to sit down and listen to prooblems," said Alexander. Associated Press INGLEWOOD, Calif.-One dozen sophomores of the thor- 'oughbred class will attempt to graduate into the Hollywood Derby field when they clash today in the $86,100 Cinema Handicap at Hollywood Park. Groshawk, the 2-year-old Western champion of 1972, heads the list with Bill Shoemaker in the irons and carrying top weight of 126 pounds. Groshawk won the Will Rogers Handicap in his latest start after injuries cut his effectiveness at Santa Anita during winter campaigning. At Hollywood Park, it has been a different situation, with Groshawk winning his last two races after placing second to Ancient Title by inches in the Inglewood Stakes. London Company, shipped from the East, will carry 122 in the Cinema, the fnal major tuneup before the Hollywood Derby on Sunday, July 15. In post position order, the entries for today are Expression, 121; Out of the East, 117; Fleet Afoot, 114; Sweet Medic, 116; Gold Bag, 114; Riight Honorable, 114; London Company, 122; Groshawk, 126; Amen II» 115; Kirrary, 114; Card Table, 110; and Carry the Banner, 117. On Sunday, the 3-year-old gals take over with 10 fillies expected in the $30,000 added Honeymoon Stakes at 1 1-16 miles, just 1-16 less than today's field runs. Jungle Princess will probably be the favorite in the Honeymoon with John Rotz taking over the riding assignment. Other choices are Sphere, Meilleur, Merry Madeleine and Rosalie Mae Wynn. 5nur*VYoy is fne Right Way/ BRAKE CPICIAL!!
