P r ~; " ?f Half of Gl deaths laid to peasants United Press International SACRAMENTO, Calif Sen. Alan Cranston, D-Calif., said yesterday "a shocking, little -known fact" is that more than half the American troops killed in Vietnam were killed by South Vietnamese civilian peasants. Speaking to a state Democratic conventiln, Cranston said, "Over half of the American boys who have died in Vietnam were not killed by front-line Vietcong or North Vietnam troops. "They were killed by South Vietnamese peasants—men, women and Children—who planted mines and booby traps." The freshman senator told newsmen later his remarks were based on information from "totally reliable" government sources. "All too often, 'liberation' of a village 'from Vietcong control means American soldiers shell the village and burn the huts, Vietnamese soldiers rape the women and steal the livestock, and absentee landlords return to reclaim the land given to the peasants by the Vietcong," he said. 'i • "Small wonder," Cranston said, repeating 'a statement he made a year ago, "the Pentagon 'has a contingency plan for fighting the South Vietnamese."-, The Senator said American troops are b e c 6 m i n g "an ever-more-inviting target" to Nixon's "slow, erratic with- the Vietcong under President d r a w a 1 under Vietnamiza- Cranston said he advocates lion." "a fixed..timetable.for withdrawal of'all our troops." POWs of WW II petition Nixon on Viet prisoners PORT ARTfiUR, Tex. (UPI) — Members of an organization of World War II prisoners called on President Nixon yesterday "to create a state of national and world indignation" over the treatment of U.S. prisoner^ held by the North Vietnamese. A letter was sent to Nixon by delegates to the annual convention of the "Lost Battalion," a group of Texas National Guardsmen and survivors of heavy cruiser USS Houston who were captured early in World War II and spent 42 months as Japanese prisoners of war. The petition to Nixon was instigated by Roy Stensland, a former officer now living at Helotes, Tex. ,. , Stensland told the former prisoners, "I am mat* ashell at \ttiese stupid people we electyand send.^Washingtoh. Two of them recently went to Vietnam and raised cain about some criminals being held by the South Vietnamese, i. i "But they didn't say a single word about the plight of our prisoners." Stensland also said the veterans group was irritated that several military men from Vietnam are being accused of murder in connection- with some incidents in that war.
