REPUBLIC M2 the Arizona Republic June 30,1973 f 'Wild' U.S. team loses *• Associated Press J ANAHEIM - The touring J Japanese All-Star baseball *team capitalized on wildness £ by the United States College £ All-Stars to score a run in the £ bottom of the ninth inning £ Friday night and take a 4-3 <; victory. J : The triumph was the visi- £ tors' second in six games v The score was tied 3-3 in 1 the bottom of the ninth when, one out, Kiyoshi Nakaha- Vta struck out but was safe at first on a passed ball by catcher Pat Russell of Northridge State. Texas pitcher Rick Wortham then struck out opposing hurler Kenjuro Nakamura but leadoff batter Yuko Fujinami singled and stole second, putting men at second and third with two out. However, Wortham then walked Hideaki Uyama and Daisuke Yamashita to walk home the winning run. The Americans struck Penn State pulling out of athletic conference quickly, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Creighton Tevlin of Southern California singled and teammate Rich Dauer was safe on a fielder's choice. Then USC's Fred Lynn doubled home two runs. The Japanese knotted the score in the bottom of the inning when Fujinami and Uyama singled off starter George Milke of the Trojans. They were -wild pitched to second and third and Koji Yamamoto singled to tie the game. The U.S. team assumed' a 3-2 on a home run by Roy Smalley in the fourth but Japan tied the score in the same frame when Nakamura walked, took second on a ground out, went to third on a passed ball and scored on Uyama's grounder. Sophomore showdown slated in Hollywood Derby tun cup Associated Press > STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — pPenn State is pulling out of •7 the Eastern Collegiate Athlet- > ic Conference because it feels £ it is contributing more finan- •«£ dally to the 214-member or- ;f« ganization than it's getting in £ services. ,/' Athlitic director, Ed war d M. (AP) 'ftancy Lopez* 16, of Roswell, ; N.M., easily retained her '. Women's Western Golf Asso- elation junior championship Friday by downing Lori Garbacz, 14, of South Bend, Ind., 7-6. ' Miss Lopez played one over par golf for 12 holes on the Lake Geneva Country Club course in beating the Indiana junior champion. In making the announcement, Czekaj said the decision was reached after a thorough evaluation of Penn State's athletic posture with its continuing goal of providing national leadership in intercollegiate athletics. "We feel emphasizing our national position as a major independent enables us to be' more effective in such leadership efforts," Czekaj said. . Czekaj referred to the ECAC's opposition to reorganization of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, which Penn State favors and ; desires to play a leading role in formulating. A Penn State spokesman explained that the university felt it was putting in more than a fair share of money in the ECAC, as much as one fifth some years. "In spite of this," the spokesman said, "the ECAC is in deficit financing, and we feel it may get worse before it gets better. The services we are deriving aren't worth it." Penn State contributes to the ECAC 10 per cent of its national football television money and $1,000 plus 10 per cent of its bowl revenues. State in recent seasons has been a regular on national TV, and played in bowl games five of the last seven years. U.S. Japan All-Stars All-Stars Mllke, Wortham (9) and Nakamura and Kusukl. W—: (1-1).
