BULLDOG 80 The Arizona Republic Phoenix, Wed., Nov. 5,1969 21 volunteer medical tests on how to conquer the jet-time zone harrier Associated Press LONDON — Twenty-one guinea pigs of the human variety have been lined up to find out how to beat the time machine in the jet plane age. These 21, including doctors, students and just plain Joes, men and women, fly out Monday for an attack on time zones and how they effect people. They will go to New York and then Palo Alto, Calif., over a 28-day period of which 14 days are to be spent in testing their heart, lungs, instincts and sleep habits. results are intended to deal with tomorrow in the jet world and supersonic aircraft. The principal sponsor, the drug firm Syntax Pharmaceuticals Ltd., told a news conference Monday how it had worked things out with TWA and a group of medical and chemical experts. Managing director David Moreau and a staff of experts said the idea is to show how effective people are when they arrive after a long trip, how vigilant they were on the-way, how they slept or didn't, and even how their sexual hormones were affected. Machines to record these things will be aboard the flight and the people will be wired for sound, some with electrode harnesses around their heads. One machine dealing with sleep reaction uses up a quarter of a mile of tape in an cigM-hour period of computerized study. Moreau said it is possible (hat evidence obtained in the four-week exercise would suggest therapeutics, namely a pill, that would enable executives to pierce the sound barrier and be able to use normal judgment because their 1 bodies and minds had been helped by some outside agency.
