1 tf i 16 injured by bombs in Ohio Associated Press COLUMBUS, Ohio-Bombs heavily damaged three stores while customers were shopping last night, injuring 16 persons. An armed man was arrested after he was chased down in a parking lot by a motorcyclist, who braved shots fired by the fleeing man. The injured, including the captured man, who suffered a broken leg, were hospitalized. One man was in critical condition. One blast heavily damaged a Penny's department store and an adjacent liquor store. A second bomb 20 minutes later blasted the rear of a Zayre department store 2 miles from the first explosion. The stores are near Whitehall, a suburb community of 20,000 persons on Columbus' east side. Columbus Disptach photographer Ken Chamberlain, who followed fire trucks to the Zayre store, said he witnessed Roger Penwell, 22, drive his motorcycle into a man firing a handgun at Penweli "I joined another man who was chasing a guy dressed in Levi's and a T-shirt," Chamberlain Said. "Suddenly the guy pulled a gun from his waist and fired . . . "Then I saw this guy on a cycle start across the parking lot to head off the gunman. The man in Levi's stopped and at least twice fired at the guy on the cycle. I could see the smoke from the snub- nosed handgun and I thought for sure the guy was hit" Chamberlain said Penwell made a complete turn on his cycle and then drove for the fleeing man. "The cyclist slammed into the gunman and knocked him down and people ran out of the store and pinned him to the ground. "The front wheel of the cycle was bent under the frame." Police also reported finding unexploded dynamite, more than 60 sticks altogether, wired to timing devices in at least three other scattered locations. Officers refused to comment on possible connections between the blasts and the unexploded dynamite or on possible motives for the blasts. Lindsay 'insult 9 results in loss of VFW meet MIAMI BEACH (AP)-The Veterans of Foreign Wars national council of administration voted unanimously here yesterday to withdraw its 1972 convention from New York City because of what its officials called insulting remarks by Mayor John Lindsay. The organization, which claims 1.6 million members, said 35,000 delegates, wives and guests attended each convention, giving a huge boost to the tourism industry in the host city. The question of the 1972 convention was referred to a site committee which will consider invitations from other cities. Raymond A. Gallagher, the VFW national commander, said the move is in retaliation for a statement attributed last spring to Lindsay in which he reportedly called draft resisters "the real heroes of the Vietnam War." Gallagher has called the remark "an insult to our veterans and our men in Vietnam. I think the mayor should suffer the consequences."
