Dessert 'takes the cake' for Labor Day By DOROTHY YF.C1.1N Labor Day weekend is summer's last holiday fling, sc let's have a picnic! We can explore a new park or stay in our own backyard, gather a gang or keep it in the family, carry some favorites from the kitchen or cook supper on the spot. Whatever we do, let's cat outdoors. And if it rains, why: not just eat outdoor-style indoors. To lead off the menu, what could be better than those standbys that taste best in the open air — hamburgers or hot dogs, fried chicken or grilled steaks? Add the traditional go-alongs to please your picnickers, and just for fun — spring a surprise for dessert. To salute the occasion In delectable style, slices of fluffy-frosted layer cuke could cap the meal. Yet dessert-making can take just a few minutes of the cook's holiday time. The recipe makes two small cakes to serve a group of about eight. Use pound cakes from the freezer and put them together with a filling combining^ frozen strawberries and canned apple pie filling for doubly-good flavor. Whipped topping from a carton also goes between layers and frosts the outside. This is a chilly creation to tote in the ice chest or park in the"refrig«rator'until time to servo.
