ALL EDITIONS ] Phoenix, Tlraw., .Time 18, W70 The Arizona Republic fff '"I Food and yonr lionlili You we By FREDRICK J. STARE, M.D. Any columnist gets lots of letters — in fact, we thrive on them. If you didn't write, we wouldn't know what you are interested in or whether you are interested in what we write. Therefore, when a letter - writer takes the time to make a thoughtful and thought - provoking point, we want to acknowledge it and think again about what we have been writing. An articulate correspondent from Milwaukee says we have been taking "swipes" at the weight reduction groups. It is true — we have — and for reasons we have explained. However, she may be right in protesting that we haven't given a complete picture of the reasoning that, for the fortunate ones, makes these groups successful. We have said that for some obese individuals the moral support a diet group offers is valuable. Like us, our Milwaukee reader is not happy with medically unsupervised dieters, with weight reduction organizations that are moneymaking schemes or with those that develop into purely social gatherings. What she does say, from personal experience, is that in a well - structured plan you can take weight off, you can learn to keep it off and you can elevate your self- respect by waging and winning the battle against extra pounds. We think the key phrase here is "learn to keep it off." At any gathering you or we attend these days we can't avoid hearing diet talk. When a friend complains "I can't have any of that — it's carbohydrate!" or another says "Oh, yes, that's on my diet, it's protein" or from someone else comes "I don't eat that, it's empty calories" — then we wonder where their nutrition knowledge comes from, what fad diet they are following or what pseudo-scientist told them these things. Reaching and maintaining desirable weight from obesity is not easy — it demands patience and self-denial, but what it also takes is an understanding that you do not have to do without all the good things you enjoy. You can learn to enjoy all foods in moderation. You can learn the choices available to you when you are counting calories. You can learn that cutting out all proteins or all carbohydrates or eating special foods does not provide a balanced nutritional program for good health. And perhaps you can learn that it's the doing of it, not the talking about it, that does the job. And a word to the wise: Follow these same rules and don't let yourself gain that extra weight. Q — Mineral oil — does it contain the approximate number of calories as salad and cooking oils? Somewhere I heard that mineral oil, not being assimilated by the system, may be less fattening than oils used in salads and thus would help cut calories. A — You read correctly. Mineral oil is not absorbed from the digestive tract and therefore it provides no calories. However, since mineral oil may dissolve fatless-soluble nutrients, such as vitamin A, its frequent and long-term laled to the use of mineral use of mineral oil is a very creams that need no refriger- A. -I'm not sure what your cause coconut oil is a saturat- this vegetable oil has a pleas- use might not be desirable.
