ALL EDITIONS 64 The Arizona Republic Phoenix, Thurs., Jnne 18,1970 Socialites, rock groups go 6 ape' with haircuts By MARY ANN CRENSHAW New. York Times Service NEW YORK - Do you know "the ape?" It's not the latest! dance craze or a science-fiction movie, but a scraggly, shaggy haircut that's turning up on socialites, secretaries, movie actresses and rock groups. Short on top (at times, al- love fs... m IDS MORES lIMEt &-I5 t •. always looking your best for him. most crew cut), long and shaggy at the sides and back, the haircut looks like the offspring of Mick Jagger and Raggedy Ann. In fact, Mick and his ilk may have started it in London, but it soon turned up here in such places as Mrs. Lovitt's Hari Shoppe and is now being cut at such Establ- i s h m e n t establishments as Kenneth's. The cut, named by youngsters who saw in it a resemblance to an ape's natural style, is meant to be put into place with nothing more than a brush and a hand-held dryer. In short, it's every woman's dream. Peripatetic Mrs. Anthony Mazzola, whose husband is editor-in-chief of Town & Country, has her honey-blonde hair cut into this nonhair- do By Henry Bendel's chief crimper - in - residence, Paul Mitchell. Mrs. Mazzola vows that she never will go back to the "tons of wigs" she used to drag about with her on her travels. She has her n o n h a i r d o cut once-over-lightly every six weeks, she says, and never weeks, she says, and never needs help from Mitchell be tween hairaits. At Mrs. Ixtvitt's, the instruction (to men, too, since the cut is not restricted to women) is "come back in six months." At'Kenneth's, Kenneth himself recently cut and hand-dried the hair of Mrs. William Phipps, who then set off on a six-month jaunt around the world, confidently armed with nothing more than a hand-dryer and a set of heat-up curlers. Vidal Sassoon, the English crimper whose revolutionary haircutting techniques made the cut possible, has his own version of it, which he describes as "just hair, growing."
