Get Dean's Pills today t P RESIDENT EISENHOWER paid a rare visit to Griffith Stadium in June, partly to see the Washington Senators play the Baltimore Orioles and partly to see young Harmon Killebrew of the Senators hit a home run. Killebrew obliged with his 19th of the young season. The only active big-leaguer discovered by a U. S. Senator, Killebrew also accommodated the Chief Executive with an autographed baseball—requested, "because my grandson, David, idolizes you." Young David Eisenhower isn't alone. The Senators' broad-shouldered third baseman is the .mo.st exciting new star in baseball, making good in a big way on promise shown ever since the late Sen. Herman Welker of Idaho tipped off Washington about him. That was five years ago when Harmon was a 17- year-old schoolboy in Payette, Idaho. Calvin Griffith, owner of the club, sent his ace scout, Ossie Bluege, out to see if Senator Welker was on to a good thing. Bluege watched the muscular kid wallop three ho- meis and a triple and promptly offered him a $30,000 bonus to sign a professional contract. Ever since, the Senators have been waiting for the youngster to reach maturity. This season he did—with a bang that exploded all around the American League. "The Real Joe Hardy," newspapermen dubbed him, referring to the fictional char- iictei' who was planted in the Senators' lineup by the Devil in the musical comedy, "Damn Yankees." The steady barrage of home runs that rocketed off Killebrew's bat seemed as unbelievable as the zany tale about the year the Senators beat the Yankees out of the pennant. As the homers mounted writers also began to call the kid, "Killer," and chances are that nickname will stick, although Harmon's manner is more like a shy
