usmess 82 Phoenix, Sat., Ang. 15,1970 Big Board achieves c? first advance of week Complete American Stock Exchange list New York Times Service NEW YORK - The stock market staged a modest advance yesterday, its first gain in a downward week. Trading remained relatively slow at 7.85 million shares. Recently-battered glamour issues shared in the upswing, IBM, which had lost 15V* points in the two previous sessions, rose 6 7 /s to 229 7 /s. Airlines rounded out the week as the market's best- performing group. Airline stocks, which have toppled sharply during the prolonged bear market, currently are buoyed somewhat by hopes for interim rate increases. The Big Board's best percentage gainers were Western Air Lines, up 1% to 10%, and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, up 3 to 35. Eastern Air Lines rose a point to 16. Helping the market's tone yesterday were two developments, one economic and the other technical, newly reported economic statistics by government agencies suggested Totai a iSfu« that the business downturn ei- N!W mo io'ws s ther had ended or was ending. On the technical side, .J^ ffi.t a 8!bi>^3?i. Ml " 1 27 °- short covering by traders assisted in lifting the prices of glamour issues. The Dow-Jones industrial average finished 3.49 points higher at 710.84. Its net loss for the week came to nearly 15 points. Boise Cascade, a producer of building materials and paper products, led the active list. The stock closed off 2% points at 40%. The company recently reported sharply lower profits for its June quarter. Eight of the 15 most heavily traded issues closed with gains, including General Motors, up a point to 68, and Xerox, up iy 8 to 67%. Xerox terminated acquisition talks with Career Academy. Gulf and Standard Oil (New Jersey), in a generally firm oil sector, posted fractional gains on the active roster.
