Word-a-day WATCH YOUR DRINKA LARCENOUS BIRD' larcenous a * i s. se-ntis/ AD<J. THIEVISH; PULL OF PLANS FOR COMMITTING THEFTS g-«fl Headaches of boy may be allergy By DR. P.J. STEINCROHN Doctor's Views Many a youngster suffers from headaches in solitude, and completely misunderstood. Not only does he have the headache t o contend with, but a parent who is punitive; who Doctor's views spanks him and thinks of him as a neurotic. Dear Dr. Steincrohn: What can a mother do with a 5- year-old boy who becomes ob- strepterous and keeps complaining of headaches? I've tried everything from trying to be nice all the way to giving him a good spanking. Otherwise he seems healthy. He has had his tonsils out and no trouble was found with his sinuses. I think I've got a young neurotic om my hands. I'll appreciate any suggestions. — Mrs. A. I can't even guess what's wrong, but I can imagine your frustration. And your child's. Therefore, the first suggestion I make is that you discontinue the spankings.. (If you have ever had a headache yourself, I doubt you would welcome that kind of therapy.) ^ from way back here I'll make just one guess, even though I said earlier that I shouldn't. Have you considered the possibility that your little boy is allergic to some foodstuff? I believe that this is a commonly overlooked cause of headaches in youngsters — and in adults, too. I recall one "obstreperous" little boy like your own who became a sweet, easily manageable child, when the doctor discovered he was allergic to tomatoes. No more tomatoes, no more headaches and irritability. Then tjiere was the little girl who became depressed, wouldn't go out to play, because "I've got a headache, Mother." She, too, was thought of as a budding neurotic until the doctor deleted chocolate from her diet. Headaches, nervousness, depression can come on within hours after taking the offending food — and these symptoms may last for a day or two. Common offenders in the diet are corn, tomatoes, citrus fruits, chocolate, eggs, wheat, milk, fish, nuts. Sometimes vitamins or other medications will set off headaches like a time-bomb. Therefore, Mrs. A., I suggest that you take your son to a pediatrician or to an allergist for study. Remember that most normal children with headaches are not neurotics. As the saying goes, something real is "bugging them." Your job is to be patient rather than keep punishing rum for being a bad boy. Bogus dollars spotted in Eire DUBLIN (AP) - Hundreds of counterfeit dollars are being circulated in Ireland and U.S. authorities have been asked to track down the source of them, Dublin* police said yesterday. A spokesman said the bills are "quite good forgeries," in denominations of $10 |20 and $100. He said they were printed on "photo copy" paper in America and apparently sent here. Patrick Brennan, security officer at jhe U.S. Embassy in Dublin, 'said he has sent descriptions of the fakes to the U.S. office in Paris which deals with counterfeiting. Irish police warned all hotel owners, shopkeepers and other traders to inspect all 'S currency they handle. Narcotic sanction* against popular pain-killer up for consideration Associated Press rant*™* *i™,f »u. ; . = t REPUBLIC Associated Press WASHINGTON — A Justice Department scientific advisory committee tomorrow will consider possible narcotic sanctions against a $2<V-million-a-year pain-killing drug blamed for a 200 per cent increase in addiction reports among users this year. The public has been generally unaware of the addiction potential of the widely used prescription analgesic pentazo- cine, best known by its trade name Talwiri. Michael R. Sonnenreich, deputy chief counsel of the Bureau jpnvarcotics and Dangerous Drugs, said yesterday he is very concerned about the jump in reports of Talwin addiction or dependency from a total of 70 in January to 205 through ' 1 !; ft ? But the company adver- 1S ffee fr ° m Strictt fede ^ narcotic The drug bureau's scientific advisers will consider whether to recommend such restrictions. Talwin is available now merely by presenting a doctor's prescription at a drugstore. Imposition of narcotic restrictions would require manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers to inventory their stocks and maintain records of receipts and sales of the drug. Physicians would be allowed to write single prescriptions for Talwin for no longer than six months, with a maximum ot live refills.
