Kuhnke surprises San I ana DUESSELDORF, Germany (AP) — Christian Kuhnke boosted West Germany into a 1-1 tie with Spain yesterday With a 6-4, 6-8,12-10,6-2 victory over Manuel Santana in Interzone Davis Cup tennis competition. Spain's Manuel Orantes defeated Wilhelm Bungert 6-4, lft-8, 11-9 in the opening singles match of the test-of-five series that sends the winner against the United States in the Challenge Round at Cleveland Aug. 29-31. Nebraskan sets pace in Buckeye Associated Press CINCINNATI - Andy Cohn Fischer hit 14 greens and went on to post a four - under - par 68 yesterday to take the first - round lead in the LPGA Buckeye Invitational at Royal Oak Racquet and Country Club. Mrs. Fischer, a housewife from Lincoln, Neb., competing in only her second tournament this year, birdied the first, third, fifth, llth and 14th holes over the 6,110-yard course. She had only one bogey, that coming on the sixth hole. She sank a 30-foot putt on the llth hole. Tied at 69 were Sharon Miller, Battle Creek, Mich.; Betsy Rawls, Spartanburg, S.C. and Sandra Spuzich, Indianapolis, Ind., defending Buckeye champion. • Sandra Palmer, Port St. Lucia, Fla., fired a three under par 33 on the front nine but soared to a 37 on the back nine and finished with a 70. Also tied at 70 were Pam H i g g i n s, Groveport, Ohio; Mary Mills, Ocean Springs, Miss., and Jo Ann Prentice, Columbia, S.C. "I felt like I got it all together," Mrs. Fischer said. "I felt that every time I got up to a green that I'd make a putt. I just seemed to zero in on each hole. "I'm swinging and playing better than I have in my whole life." Action will continue today and tomorrow in the 54-hole tournament. The day's best tennis was tucked into the third set of the Kuhnke-Santana match. It took one hour and 35 minutes to play. Leading 9-8, the 32-year-old Spaniard appeared on the verge of winning in the 18th game with a 15-40 lead. But Kuhnke battled back and after two deuce points pulled it out to even the match 9-9. They played evenly until the 21st game when, with Santana serving, the linesman made a delayed ruling that Stacy, Aulisi clash for title RYE, N.Y. (AP) - Defending champion Hollis Stacy of Savannah,, Ga., and Janet AuJisi of West Caldwell, N.J., who pulled off a major upset, qualified yesterday for the final in the U.S. Girls Junior Golf Championship. Miss Stacy, showing little sign of an injured hand that troubled her earlier in the tournament, defeated Elizabeth Pooley of. Gainsville, Fla., 2-up on the par 73, 6,091- yard Apawanis Club course. Miss Aulisi, a 15-year-old playing in only her second match play tournament, defeated Mary Budke of Dayton, Ore., 1-up on the 19th hole after being two-down at the 17th. he had doubled faulted at duece point.
