Donald Rumsfeld OEO eases draft ruling ior VISTA United Press International . WASHINGTON - The di;rector of the Office of Eco- .'nomic Opportunity has told .VISTA volunteers that he will .support their efforts to get ;occupational draft deferments •if they asked for the defer- 'ment before April 23. A letter from OEO director .Donald Rumsfeld to VISTA 'Volunteers announced that he .'had reversed a policy announced April 21 saying that 3ie was asking the Selective Service system not to give ithe young antipoverty work- •ers any occupational deferments. -•.The earlier policy clashed ;only two days later with an .executive order from Presi- ;dent Nixon, abolishing occupational deferments, but say,mg that such deferments jwould be granted for those 'Who held them or asked for Ithem before April 23. • Rumsfeld noted in his letter .that there was a conflict be- •tween his earlier announced <policy and the President's or- j- ; "It appears sensible to me ,to eliminate any confusion ;this could cause," he said. •_He also acknowledged that .his decision to change his policy had been influenced by ''the persuasive case made ,By volunteers and others that ;a more restrictive policy than the President's resulted in imdesirable complications for individuals already in the draft appeal pipeline." One who protested Rumsfeld's earlier ruling was Sen Alan Cranston, D-Calif., who wrote Nixon that the policy 'went considerably beyond the position you announced." • VISTA - Volunteers In Service To America-is a domestic Peace Corps that works in remote or depressed areas in the United States.
