REPUBLIC MAIL 36 The Arizona Republic REPUBLIC' .BULLDOG Phoenix, Wed., Nov. 5, 1969 RyanO^Neal to Him with AU By JOYCE HABEB Los Angeles Times Sedvice HOLLYWOOD - "We looked at 1,000 actors and that's not an exaggeration," says Paramounl's vice presi- ' dent for production Robert Evjans. "We tested 14 un- knewns, and none of them coijld compare to Ryan O'Neal." Evans is talking about the male starring role in "Love Story," which also happens to star his bride, All Macgraw. Wh'at with Ryan opposite Ali, the; movie could be" fetitled, "The Beautiful People.'* O'Neal, according to Evans, plays "a Cary Grant role — a handsome leading man with lots of emotion." He also plays hockey at Harvard, so the night he got the part Ryan went out to practice ice skating. He came home all black and blue. In the film, O'Neal's a wealthy young man who falls for, Ali, natch. She's a girl from the wrong side of the tracks. But Ryan, who becomes a lawyer, marries her. Arthur Hiller will direct, and Howard Minsky will produce from the screenplay based on Erich's Segal's first novel, out in February. Meanwhile, Ryan (who just played a different kind of athlete in Fox's "Games") takes off for the east and -snow country — to brush up on his ice skating. * * * Godfrey Cambridge, black comedian, opened again at our Century Plaza and tickled the funny bones of .an almost all - white audience. His listeners included numerous execs of Columbia Pictures, where he just completed "The Night the Sun Came Out." Among the laughers: producer and former studio chief Robert Weitrhan and Director Daniel Mann ("A Dream of Kings"). Cambridge is a sort of white man's Mort Sahl. For example, "last year CBS decided to give me a new contract for a lot of money because the race race is on. And CBS is behind," or Tm glad the Negro image is changing in movies. Take 'Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.' Can a white wealthy San Francisco family accept the marriage of their daughter to a typical Negro% . . . I watched that "typical Negro" a few nights later. Sidney Poitier was playing pool with Don Marshall, Gary Morton and Milton Berle for $100 a point. It was after dinner, an ordinary casual night at Polly Bergen's and Fred- die Fields, JOWIGHT HARKINS tower plaza theatre Sgndy Dennis Jhot Jr^B^SRS^ r^V_AJl(J *the ™^ ' ^ Kark ' CAC9 MARIA SCHELL in WOMEM | Suggested For Mature Audiences!
