LIE'RA RY UNIVERSITY SIA READ THE ENTERPRISE THIS WEEK EVERY WEEK SHOP ENTERPRISE ADS FOR BUDGET BUYS VOL No 24 NATCHITOCHES LOUISIANA THURSDAY MARCH 27th 1952 TEN CENTS PER COPY Annual Louisiana Speech Tournament Opens Friday at Northwestern State Various speech events and debate will take the spotlight at Northwestern State college this week end when 150 students from six states will converge on the Demon campus for the annual Louisiana speech tournament Kenneth Osterberger Elected President Of Student Body at Louisiana State Kenneth Osterberger was elected president of the student body of Louisiana State university this week He is also president of the Newman club and Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity Osterberger is majoring in agronomy at the university and holds a full time position with the City National Bank in Baton Rouge He is the son of Mrs George Breazeale of this city and the late Kenneth Osterberger at one time agriculture teacher in the Cloutierville high school Additional Fund Requested By Nat'l Red Cross Officials of the Natchitoches parish chapter of the American Red Cross this week were notified that the overwhelming disaster occur- ing throughout the nation last week has necessitated increasing the parish quota by $500 This great disaster the worst tornado damage in decades has placed upon the Red Cross an added burden of $5000000 for meeting human needs With reserves depleted it is necessary to appeal to the public for additional funds The national organization as dispatched to the stricken area food clothing trained workers and doctors and nurses Whole blood and plasma have been flown to the communities If you have not made your con-tributon yet plan to increase it to aid in this humanitarian work If you have already given you contribute a little more to make the tragedy lighter for those countless victims? University of Arkansas Southwestern Missouri Central (Mo) State SLI LEU Louisiana college SLC Louisiana Tech and the host college NSC The Northwestern debaters will leave for Jackson Miss Sunday and a forensic meet at Milsaps college Smith said that three teams would make the trip to the Mississippi tournament Cancer Appeal Here to Be Made April 18 The local goal in the 1952 Cancer Crusade has been set at $1000 and the campaign for funds will begin on April 18 according to Edgerton Pierson crusade chairman A one hour evening drive on that date will be confined to the residential sections only Mr Pierson pointed out and there will be no solicitations in the business district lie disclosed that the national goal wiU be $16000000 The funds will be used to support broad programs of research ser-vlcfs to cancer patients and pub-lie and professional education April will again be designated National Cancer Control month by presidential proclamation and Act of Congress A little more than $15000000 was contributed to the 1951 Cancer Crusade Mr Pierson said that the educational messages distributed by Crusade solicitors will carry important life saving information "The magnitude of our Sixty Initiated By Knights of Columbus Sunday Some 329 members of the Knights of Columbus from District 18 which includes all Louisiana parishes north of Alexandria met here Sunday for initiation ceremonies Sixty candidates were initiated 2 Following Mass at 8:00 a-m at the Church of the Immaculate Conception celebrated by Msgr John Vandegaer the group was served breakfast at the Parish Hall in St Marys high school After exemplifications of First and Second degrees lunch was served to the candidates In the afternoon the Major degrees were exemplified and at 3 a tea honoring the visiting ladies was given at the KC-CDA Home on Fourth street The event was climaxed by a banquet for members and ladies in the dining hall on the Northwestern State college campus The initiation was dedicated to the memory of the late Louis Gimbert former State Warden of the Louisiana State Council Knights of Columbus Among notables present were: State Deputy Charles CL Jaubert of Lake Charles Past State Deputy Jerry Byan of Bunkie EL Giering Jr of Natchitoches and re million of Alexandria District Deputies and Grand Knights John lies and Slcard Sr both of Shreveport Burgoyne of Monroe Cruse of Alexandria and Henry De-Blieux of the local Knights of Columbus ANNUAL INDUSTRIAL EDUCATION CONTEST SET FOR APRIL 26 The second annual Industrial Education awards contest will be held at Northwestern State college Saturday April 26 Students from the seventh grade through high school will submit projects and compete in examinations in their field of work with the best projects to be certified for entry in the Ford Industrial Arts awards contest in June The projects range from metal and leather working through electronics Awards will be given for first second and third place winners Industrial arts instructors may obtain entry blanks for their stu- dents from the Industrial Education department Box 1656 Northwestern State college' before April 15 Weaver 82 Succumbs Mar 23 Weaver brother of Sam Weaver long prominent in the lumber business in the Shreveport area and himself long identified in the lumber field in Natchitoches and Shreveport died in St Petersburg Florida March 23 one day after his 82nd birthday He had been ill a short time Mr Weaver was born near Dalton in Murray county Georgia in 1870 and lived ther until shortly after his marriage to Elvira Lough-ridge of Eton Georgia in 1897 With his brothers Sam and John he started a portable sawmill It was moved to Alabama a few years after and then to Natchitoches Their lumber and mill activities were gradually expanded and in addition the Weaver Brothers Wholesale Lumber Co was organized in Shreveport In 1909 Mr Weaver with his brother Sam and brother-in-law Loughridge started the Weaver-Loughridge Lumber Co at Boyd Florida and in 1923 they further expanded their holdings by purchasing what is now the Pinellas Lumber Co at St Petersburg Late in 1924 Mr Weaver and other civic leaders' joined in organizing the St Petersburg Kennel club to present greyhound racing He had been general manager of that enterpirse virtually since its organization and served as president until elevated to the post of chairman of the board a few years ago At the time of his death Mr Weaver was president of the Weaver-Loughridge corporation of Shreveport Funeral services were to be held Tuesday at Baynard Funeral home in St Petersburg and interment was to be in Eton Georgia Wednesday Survivors include three sons A and A Weaver three daughters Mrs Pearl Hankins Mrs Joyce Brook and Mrs May Trefethen all of St Petersburg one brother Weaver of Shreveport and several grandchildren ELIZABETH LEO TO PRESENT RECITAL SUNDAY The Northwestern State college music department will present Miss Elizabeth Ann Leo of Natchitoches fas her senior voice recital Sunday afternoon at 3 The March 30 recital will be given in the Little Theater of the Fine Arts building on the college campus Miss Leo is majoring in music at NSC and will be graduated this spring For three years she has studied with Mrs Lillian McCook former NSC voice teacher and this year she has been studying with Miss Ann Elizabeth Higgs of the Northwestern music faculty Accompanying Miss Leo at the piano will be Ted Forte sophomore music student from Lake Village Ark Miss Leo's six-part recital will include selections from Bach De-bussey Shubert Brahms Franz Woodman Kelley Hageman and other famous composers St Maurice Lane HD Clubbers Learn Metal Tray Work The SL Maurice Lane home demonstration club met at the home of Mrs Willie Ethel Boydstun for its March meeting Attractive arrangements of white iris and other spring flowers decorated the living room The meeting was called to order with the reading of the club collect The international relations report was given by Mrs Harriet Yancey This report was an explanation of the Pennies for Friendship this is a penny a member gift to the Associated Country Women of the World A copy of the club project was shown to the group and volunteers were asked to help distribute the papers a-long the Lane for signatures of the different home owners who will cooperate with the club members in their project A report of the Home Demonstration council was given by the president New business was the changing of the next demonstration from the scheduled one to one on bag making The meeting was turned over to Miss Vernon who gave the demonstration on metal tray making Most of the members had their trays stamped and were ready to go to work Several of the trays were completed before the Westside Opens April 6 Beginning Sunday April 6 there is to be a youth-led revival at the West Side Baptist church of this city The evangelist is to be Michael Gilcrist an honor student at Louisiana college He is a great youth evangelist well known in this state Brother Gilcrist is to bring with him Wayne Craig also a student at Louisiana college This revival is to last one week the closing night being Sunday April 13 Although this revival is to be led by the youth of West Side it is for everyone and adults are especially invited to hear the inspiring messages Morning services begin at 10 and the evening services are to be held at 7:30 The public is cordially invited to attend and help make this a great revival for God Emergency Red Cross Drive Here Saturday The Volunteer Service ladies of the American Red Cross will conduct an emergency drive Saturday to help raise money for the Emergency Relief fund for tornado sufferers in Arkansas Mississippi Tennessee and Missouri Mrs Chester Cannon is acting chairman of the drive in the absence of Mrs Ed InabnetL The ladies will hold the drive in front of Hotel Nakatosh and will be assisted by the Booster club of Natchitoches high school with Jo Ann Prestridge president in charge MISS MAIZIE BEEBE BECOMES BRIDE OF LESLIE RACHAL Miss Maizie Beebe daughter of Mrs Rose Beebe of Chopin and Leslie Rachal son of Mr and Mrs Rana Rachal of Lena Station were married in a very impressive double ring ceremony performed by Rev Francis Roth in SL Catholic church in Boyce on Saturday March 22 at 4:30 The bride was beautifully dressed in a navy blue ensemble with pink accessories and a corsage of pink carnations Mrs Clayton Vallery sister of the groom was the only attendant She was attired in a pink pique ensemble with white accessories Clayton Vallery served hi brother-in-law as best man The bride is a graduate of the Cloutierville high school and at iue time of her marriage was employed by the Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Co in Shreveport The groom has recently been discharged from the service after having served four years in the army where he held the rank of sergeant in the 555th A A Bn of th 24th division He is a veteran of the Korean war having been returned to the States in July 1951 after serving 11 months in Korea where' he received the Purple Heart for wounds received in action Following the ceremony a reception was held in the home of the mother The couple are making their home in Shreveport for the present Soil testing is one of the 'best known methods for determining the fertilizer needs of your crop or lawn Fairview Alpha News MRS BOYD Correspondent Miss Loy Williams daughter of Mr and Mrs Larry Williams of Ashland became the bride of Rev Larry Joyner son of Rev and Mrs Ben Joyner of Fairview Alpha in an impresive ceremony which took place Saturday evening at 7 o'clock at the Zion Baptist parsonage here The father of-ficatcd at the ceremony in the presence of an assembly of relatives and friends The bride was lovely in a spring ensemble of light green worn with white and black accessories She wore a corsage of yellow blossoms A sister-in-law Mrs Walker was matron of honor and the only attendant The groom's brother-in-law Rev Guy Murphy of Goldonna was best man The bride is a student in Ashland high school and the groom attended Louisiana college where he was a ministerial student for three years Immediately following their marriage the young couple left for Shreveport to visit her mother who is critically ill in a sanitarium there After a short wedding trip Rev and Mrs Joyner will be at home here Mrs Georgia Barr of Bossier City was the week end guest of her daughter Mrs Cleatus Smith Mr Smith and their son Gaynel Plans are going forward for revival services to begin Sunday March 30 at Zion Baptist church here with Rev Buchanan of Calvary Church Shreveport doing the preaching and Rev Carraway leading the singing Rev Ben Joyner is the recently-named pastor of this church This is Brother fifth time to sene here as pastor Cottage prayer meetings are scheduled for each 'night this week in homes of the community The public is cordially invited to attend all these services Davis Springs Methodist church here was host to the quarterly conference Sunday Rev Jolly Harper district superintendent preached at 11 o'clock A basket lunch was served at noon then the church went into a business session This meeting was well attended by representatives from Mt Zion church near Montgomery which church with Davis Springs makes up this circuit Honored guests on this occasion were Rev and Mrs Glen Smith of Pleasant Hill He is a former pastor of Davis Springs and they have many friends in this locality Mrs McCoy of Logansport spent last week here with her daughter Mrs Ben Joyner and her family She was present for the marriage of her grandson Rev Larry Joyner Saturday evening She worshipped with Zion congregation Sunday morning Mr and Mrs Ben Johnson and their children of Rayville were week end visitors of her mother Mrs Ella Davis and familyy (Bud) Brown spent the week end at home here with his family He is an employee of the paper mill at Springhill The Fairview Alpha 4-H club met March 11 with Miss West and Mr Martin The meeting was called to order by the president The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved There being no old or new business to come before the club the meeting was then turned over to Carolyn Weaver who had charge of the program The following program was given: "Be a Booster" by Elaine Rains "SL Day" by Ellen Holman "The by Loraine Rains and "You Tell on Yourself" by Dorothy Baker Miss West then led the group in some songs After the program the boys assembled in the study hall with Mr Martin for a demonstration on grafting pecan trees Miss West gave the girls a demonstration on judging fresh vegetables The meeting adjourned when the period bell rang POLIO FUNDS A total of $290090 has been contributed to the Natchitoches parish March of Dimes Polio fund according to Charles Cunningham chairman The amount is the largest ever raised here the chairman Mrs Irma Willard Talks on Art Program "Dreams Become Reality" is the title of a talk on the organization of a state art education program given by Mrs Irma Som-payrac Willard at the Mississippi Education association convention recently in Jackson Miss Mrs Willard is state supervisor of Art Education for Louisiana and a native of Natchitoches where she spent the week end with her sister Mrs A Dunckel-man enroute from Jackson and Shreveport to her headquarters with the State department of education in Baton Rouge Powhatan Baptist Church Planning Revival March 29 Powhatan Baptist church is looking forward to a great revival during the Evangelistic Crusade in the Natchitoches association The Rev Jesse Norris pastor of Pelican Drive Baptist church Pineville will be the speaker and Jimmy Brown will lead the song service The revival will begin Saturday March 29 at 7:30 and will continue with morning and night services through Sunday April 6 Chestnut News Following in the wake of winds which almost reached gale proportions sleet and hail played predominant roles in the official opening of spring Early seeding of crops and -gardens has been delayed however no appreciable damage has been reported The Rev and Mrs Sybil Doyle of Alexandria were church visitors at Home Baptist church on Sunday They also were guests in the home of Mr and Mrs Holland Mrs Thomas of Hot Springs Ark is visiting her daughter and family here Mr and Mrs Doyle Ray Thomas tor-adic winds struck near her home in Arkansas but none of her family was injured As of this writing Mrs Larry Williams remains gravely ill in and hospital in Shreveport although her condition is reported to be slightly improved Mr and Mrs Bamberg were Shreveport business visitors last week M-Sgt David Bennett of Chicago 111 was the dinner guest on Sunday of Mr and Mrs Henry Stewart While on leave he also visited other friends and relatives in South Louisiana Mr A Barham cattle dealer of Arcadia was a business visitor in the IL Cloud home on Mon-dayy Messrs Morgan Quick and A Quick attended the livestock auction sale in Clarence on Tuesday Mr and Mrs Bailey of Coushatta were Sunday visitors in the home of Mr and Mrs Trichel The Rev and Mrs Thompson local pastor visited Mrs Larry Williams who is ill in a Shreveport hospital last week A novel and very unique mode of communication has been adopted by Mr Wooley and Us employer Mr Palmer of Natchitoches When Mr Palmer desires hasty contact with Mr Wooley he flies over his home in his airplane and drops a note in his back yard streets when detailed explanations of the school will be given In order that all employees may attend a session each day classes will be conducted at 10 a and 2:30 Employees are expected to attend a session on each of the three days to be eligible for a Certificate of Merit which is given by Louisiana department of Health The first day will involve a discussion on bacteriology and food BOBBY BYLES Bobby Byles Is Socialist of Month at SMHS Bobby Byles popular senior at SL Marys high school was elected Sodalist of the month for February last week This year Bobby has been active in many activities: publicity chairman for the Sodality master of ceremonies at many school functions performer in the vaudeville show and the talent show at the beginning of the fall semester and the editor of the school paper for the first semester of the year popularity is mostly due to the fact that he is a true friend a good sport is willing to stand up for what he thinks is right and his constant good humor and sharp wit All the students and teachers are confident of success in the future because he has the fine qualities of leadership and understanding William Gazia Dies Of Heart Attack Willie Gazia Sr 43 of the Spanish Lake community died suddenly following a heart attack in Powhatan Monday March 24 1952 at 7 a Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 at Old Bethel Baptist church with Rev Gor-um pastor of -Clarence church officiating Interment was in the church cemetery under the direction of First National Funeral home Survivors include his wife the former Miss Bertha Long three sons Willie Jr Charles and Arthur Gazia six daughters Mrs Laveme Prothro Frances James and Mrs brother Lannie Ray Fletcher both of Northwestern State college SOCIAL SECURITY WORKER SETS VISITS The itinerant schedule of the Alexandria office of the Social Security administration provides for six visits to Natchitoches during the April-June quarter according to John Engelsman manager of the office He said Loye Copeland field represent tative in charge of field work in this section will be at the Louisiana State Employment service office in Natchitoches at 9:30 a on April 1 and 15 May 6 and 20 and June 3 and 17 Clients wishing to see the representative while in Natchitoches are asked to write at least a week in advance of the visiL so that definite appointments can be given and undue waiting time Powhatan News On Tuesday March 18 the sixth and seventh grades spent the day visiting in Natchitoches This was a reward accorded their room because they collected the largest pile of scrap iron in a recent drive sponsored by the 4-H club This first visit was to the office where they were graciously received by Sheriff Earl Morris and his staff Here they were instructed in various ways in which our law enforcement agency is constantly working for our protection and for the first time they saw the interior of the jail Mr Martin and Mr Perot took their pictures and made a recording of their voices After being treated to a coke by Sheriff Morris the group reluctantly left his office and visited vith Mr Swett the clerk of court After looking at and- admiring his curios he showed them some very interesting old records in his office some dating back to 1769 The next point of call was the office of the Natchitoches Enterprise where Mr Hardin courteously toured the class through the plant and explained many facts of the printing business to them After lunch at the Trailways Bus station the group visited the campus of Northwestern State college They saw the stone which marks the home site of SL Denis They enjoyed seeing the fish pond and beautiful natatorium on the college campus Last but not leasL the trip took the group for a trip through the Coca-Cola Bottling planL They were amazed at the amount of machinery and delighted with a 6-4 win over the Alexandria Air Base nine Two men were out in the second inning of the tilt and Martin still had a three-two count after rifling off several fouls one of which cleared the fence when he teed off on losing pitcher Bob offering In the third frame Bill Gray had gained two NSC tallies when he laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to score Sammy Booras and Johnny Emmons The Airmen garnered checks for April will be mailed about ten days earlier than usual according to Stewart director of Natchitoches parish department of public welfare Beginning in May all public welfare checks will be mailed during the first three or four days of the month April checks for Natchitoches parish will be mailed from Baton Rouge on the following dates: Old Age assistance April 9 Aid to Needy Blind
