Will you give one hour? Will you give a pint of blood to save the life of a serviceman? Fuster DD pastor of the First Presbyterian churclf in Alexandria Services on Sunday Feb 17 are scheduled for 11 a and 7:30 From Monday through Friday Feb 18-22 only one service a day will be held at 7:30 Dr Foster holds the A degree from University of Chattan-nooga the degree from Columbia Theological Seminary and the degree from King college He has served as moderator of Knoxville Presbytery in Tennessee the Louisiana Presbytery and the Synod of Louisiana For several years Dr Foster was teacher of Bible at Chattanooga Bible Institute and served as Secretary of Bible in the public schools of Chattanooga Since 1937 he has written the weekly Sunday School expositions for the Chattanooga News Free Press and for eight years was editor of the Young department of the Southern Presbyterian FRIDAY FOR CUNNINGHAM William Tharpe Cunningham 80 died Thursday Feb 7 1952 at the Natchitoches hospitaL Funeral services were held FrT day at 10 a at the First Methodist church with Rev Benedict A Galloway officiating assisted by Rev Poole Interment was in the American cemetery under the direction of Blanchard Funeral home The deceased was a retired judge planter and business man He was the son of the late Mr and Mrs Milton Cunningham and was born in Natchitoches parish He graduated from the old Louisiana State Normal also from the School of Law He served in the leigslature for a time before being elected judge for the 10th udicial district He is survived by his widow drs Emma Johnson Cunningham four sisters Mrs Huber Hoge of New York Mrs Chester Budger of Berkley Calif and Mrs Ivy Sprawls and Mrs Andrew Hero both of New Orleans and two brothers Preston Cunningham of few Orleans and II Cunningham of Shreveport Pallbearers were: Ned ohnson Pittman Johnson Ryan Horton Horace Day Robert Dunckel-man Peyton Cunningham Charles Cunningham and Gaiennie Hyams Jr CHOATE'S MOTHER DIES Mrs Choate 73 of Mineral Springs Ark mother of Choate of this city died Friday Feb 8 at the home of her daughter Mrs Jeff Newkirk in Hot Springs Ark Funeral services were held Saturday with interment in Mineral Springs In addition to Mr Choate and Mrs Newkirk the deceased is survived by another a Shreveport hospital Rev Leonard Curtis officiated at the graveJde services and burial in the Campti cemetery was under the direction of First National Funeral home Mr Grunewald was born in Essen Germany OcL 17 1864 He came to this country in 1902 and five years later came to Campti and made his home for years with the faimly He worked with Mr and later was employed by the Standard Pipeline Co At the time of his death he was residing with Mrs McLean Charlie as he was called by most of his friends had been in failing health for several years He was loved by all who knew him and will be sadly missed He has no living relatives in this country GATLIN RITES CONDUCTED TUESDAY Henry Powell Gatlin 81 died Monday Feb 11 1952 at Corkern clinic He was a native of Austin Texas but had been a resident of Natchitoches for years Funeral services were conducted at the Blanchard Funeral home chapel Tuesday at 2 ra with the Rev Perry Webb Jr pastor of the First Baptist church officiating Masonic services were held at the grave in the American cemetery Mr Gatlin is survived by two sons Gatlin Jr of Belle-flower Calif and Jack Gatlin of Natchitoches two daughters Mrs Jewel Vedrani of Amesbury Mass and Mrs Cleo Moore of Corpus Christl Texas and one sister Mrs May Howland of Bakersfield Calif Pallbearers were Monnie Cheves Dowden DuWayne Holley Jack Warner Sam Robbins and Harold McCain West Is Head of Q'Back Club West was elected president of the Natchitoches Quarterback club at their meeting Monday night at' which the membership adopted a prepared constitution and by-laws meeting here this afternoon DR FOSTER Buildings In City Inspected For Fire Hazards Twenty-two men made 152 inspections for fire hazards throughout the City of Natchitoches this week and offered recommendations to the owners for fire prevention highlighting the visit to this city of some of the outstanding persons connected with fire prevention and fire fighting Among these were Fire Chief Robert Bogan of Baton Rouge McFarland of Atlanta Ga secretary of the Southeastern Fire Underwriters fire marshals and fire chiefs from throughout Louisiana Four local children earned valuable awards by writing top essays on fire prevention First place went to Martha Bonnctte St Marys second place Genevieve Grappe St Marys third place Frances Chopin St Marys and fourth place Roland Martin Natchitoches high school A supper honoring the visitors was held at the Central Fire station Wednesday evening WRIGHT COLLIER IS VICTIM OF HEART ATTACK Wright Collier 47 Fairview Alpha building contractor died at his home at 2:10 a Saturday Feb 9 1952 as a result of a heart attack suffered several hours earlier He was thd son of the late Mr and Mrs Thomas Collier pioneer residents of the Fairview Alpha area Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 at Davis Springs Methodist church with the Rev Cotton pastor officiating He was assisted by Rev Glen Smith and Rev Ben Joyner close friends of the Collier family Interment was in the family plot in the Davis Springs cemetery under the direction of Rockett Funeral home of Coushatta Survivors include his widow Mrs Bessie Dowden Collier two daughters Mrs Ralph Tomlinson of Natchez Miss and Mrs Wood of Bossier City two sons Reuben Collier of Fairview Alpha and Thomas Collier of the Navy San Diego Calif one sister Mrs a free throw after the tilt ended EPISCOPAL BISHOP CONFIRMS SEVEN HERE ON SUNDAY On Sunday Feb 10 the Right Rev Girault McArthur Jones DD Bishop of the Diocese of Louisiana was a visitor to Trinity Episcopal church and at the eleven service confirmed a class of seven The members of the class confirmed were Mrs Cammilla Breazeale Mrs Violet Winslow Mrs George Gerlach Jr Bonnie Bowman Georgene Claxton Fred Clay and Bob Reinhard of Winn-field The service was most impresive The altar was adorned with white gladoli and tall white candles burned in the heavy brass candelabra The choir under the direction of Lorane Brittain was augmented with a number of trained singers The offeretory was unusually beautiful and well rendered adding to the beauty and solemnity of the service In his sermon Bishop Jones paid special tribute to Trinity church its pastor and congregation then held the large congregation enthralled as he spoke directly to the confirmees inspiring them and all present with his talk Following the service there was an informal coffee honoring Bishop Jones and the members of the confirmation class in the Parish House MrSvDavid Coughlin and Mrs Heber Weller poured coffee Rapides Race The first negro selected in Pineville as an election commissioner will serve in the Feb 19 Democratic primary according to published records of the Rapides parish Democratic executive committee The negro Rufus Belgard will serve in ward nine precinct four His name was submitted by gubernatorial candidate Carlos Spaht Mrs Leona Gulfaar wife of Lawrence Guflaar who is seeking 17 great-nieces and nephews ROBBINS RECUPERATING AT LOCAL HOSPITAL A Robbins manager of Howard Lumber company and prominent businessman here is recuperating satisfactorily at the Natchitoches hospital after suffering a collapsed lung last Saturday He will be hospitalized for a period of two weeks to 30 days according to hospital authorities Band Parents Sponsor Birthday Calcar Salo The Band Parents about the Weathermaker Negro Drowns Saturday In Little River Leo Paxton negro youth from Alexandria was drowned last Saturday afternoon in Little River northeast of Cloutierville after the boat overturned in which he and a companion Gus Hamilton were fishing The two men had larted to change fishing places when the mishap occurred Both hung on to he side of the boat after being thrown into the water and Paxton went under after they had both started swimming for the shore Members of the Natchitoches lescue squad recovered the body four minutes after arriving on the scene Making the trip from the squad were Marlon Shivers either Antilley Silas St Andre Jabby Parker Scroggins Theodore Chambers Oscar Scott and Sylvan Sibley Sheriff Earl Morris and Deputy Boyd Durr also made the trip Natchitoches is on leave after completing basic training at the Medical Replacement Training Center here last Saturday He is assigned to Letterman Army hospitaL San Francisco Cal The first eight weeks of the 16-week course covered basic military training necessary for all soldiers This included weapons and combat training designed to enable the medical soldier to defend himself and his patients if the need should arise The remainder of his training was spent in individual and fundamental subjects of the Army Medical service including emergency medical treatment evacuation of casualties military sanitation and disease prevention FOUR NEGROES CHARGED WITH CATTLE THEFT Arrest of four negroes for cattle theft was announced this week by Sheriff Earl Morris Mose Harris 54-year old negro man is in the parish jail charged with theft of cow at Powhatan on Jan 16 He was apprehended last week in Lake Charles Pearl Mitchell and two sons Leo Calvin and Calvin were jailed for stealing seven head of cattle throughout the parish She was released this week under $2000 bond but Hie two youths are still in jaiL A verdict of justifiable homicide has been returned by a Natchitoches parish jury in the fatal shooting of Floyd Webb 41-year-old Winnfield man by Town Marshall Webb Edmonds of Campti Webb was shot and killed instan-ly at about 9:45 Thursday when according to Dr Pierson coroner he aimed a tire tool at the head of the officer Webb and two friends were inside the didway Cafe and had been drink-ng He alledgedly took some candy rom a counter and refused to pay for it Mrs Ross Friday the cafe wife then called the town marshal who took Webb outside and put him in his car Edmonds returned to the cafe and had been talking for several minutes when Webb entered through a side door and struck the officer twice on the head with the tire tooL The marshal then proceeded to arrest Webb and with the help of one of the friends tok him outside to put him in the BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT Mr and Mrs Thomas Jr announce the birth of a daughter on Feb 11 The baby arrived at SL Frances Cabrini hospital in Alexandria and weighed five pounds 15 ounces She has been named Marcia Jean NOTICE I Latest
