The Dow Jones industrial average, an 18.77-point winner Wednesday, was ahead 12.36 to 780.35 shortly before 3 p.m. EOT. It had been up more than 14 points. Advances led declines, 995 to 382, among the 1,751 issues crossing the tape. The five-hour turnover amounted to about 21,600,000 shares, up sharply from the 13,980,000 traded during the same period Wednesday. Prices were higher in heavy trading on the American Stock Exchange. Some analysts said the market was continuing Wednesday's rally, with many investors buying because they did not want to be left out of a significant forward move. Others said improvements in the bond market —prices rose and yields declined —was a major factor because pressures eased on interest rates. Most observers said investors were ignoring negative news, particularly to sharply lower first quarter earnings. "They're reacting to the good ones," one analyst said.
