BUSINESS & MARKETS STOCK MARKET Big Gains Are Scored In Trading STOCK AVERAGES Compiled by fh« Associated Press Prev. day 320.5 105.8 128.6 226.1 Week ago 315.0 104.0 126.1 222.1 Month ogd 303.3 102.9 122.2 215.2 Year ago 347.1 125.1 133.2 253.6 By ED MORSE AP Business News Writer NEW YORK (AP) - Heavier trading accompanied a resumption of the stock market Thurs day with some large gains early the afternoon. The Associated Press average of 60 stocks at noon was up 1.0 with industrials ahead 1.2, rails up .6, and utilities up .7. Among the general run of key stocks gains ran from fractions to around a point but there were advances of 3 or 4 points among the more widely moving issues. The market's ability to complete the job of erasing all losses since the "Black Monday" o) May 28 brought in additional buying, brokers said. Analysts notec that the month of August has historically produced the best gains of any month but they remarkec also that in the past three years rallies have topped out ft August. A growing number o! small osses or stocks showing no change >etokened precautionary profit taking. Meanwhile, ther« was little in the way of fresh news to top Wednesday's stimulating report that General Motors was predicting a seven-million-car sales year in 1963. First hour volume totaled 980,000 shares, then tapered off to 810,000 in the second hour. The auto shares kept generally ahead, Ford, GM and American Motors adding fractions while Chrysler dipped. Steels were narrowly higher on balance. IBM, having scaled the resistance level of 400 in its price chart Wednesday, shrugged off an antitrust suit and added 5 or more points. Renwed demand also was reflected by a jump of more than 5 by Crown Cork, a gain of aboul 3 by Du Pont, and advances oi a couple of points apiece by Polaroid and Zenith.
