Our Four Most Unusual" Picnics Any picnic is fun, but this family has found a way to make each one a new adventure By HM and MARGIE lOSEPH wood, too, for cooking. Island wood is likely to be wet, Campfire Picnic There's something cozy and special when you picnic after dark. And nothing makes an after-dark quick-nic more radiant (or more quickly takes the chill off the evening) than a campfire. For wieners or shish kebab, we bring along skewers. Finding them is often difficult. We made ours—each sized to its user—^from lengths of unpainted steel curtain rods (three- feet for Dad; two-feet for young Jay), and each insulated with a fish- pole's cork handgrip. Foraging Picnic Here's a quick- nic combining a treasure hunt and eating with everybody contributing his "find" to the pot. The secret—whether you forage a beach f or jshrimps and clams or picnic in the country where the "finds" run to sweet com and farm-fresh vegetables—is to start with a basic Campfires give grownups and kids a chance to eook wieners on the coals. Scouting for wood is half the fun (at least for kids). The rest of the fun is yours to contrive. We've left our campfire .to hike barefooted along a beach. We've staged "spook hunts" just beyond the fire's light. Quick-nics, being strictly impromptu, are a family's best excuse for what a family likes best: a wiener roast with marshmallows (roasted or toasted with squares of chocolate between graham crackers) for dessert and everything else straight from a can. Or you might try wiener-and-sliced-pineapple shish kebab roasted over the fire. The foraging picnic means good eating and the fun of a treasure hunt. stew or chowder. Everything you find to add to the pot makes your already savory basic recipe even better. But nothing, really, can spoil the "broth" which simmers while everybody goes hunting for things to add. Any fish that's edible (most are) and big enough to fillet, skin, and cut into chunks is fine for the pot. The kids can go foraging along the shore for all manner of marine and freshwater edibles: clams, oysters, crayfish, shrimps, and crabs. Most of them —once you scrub their shells clean and remove any barnacles or growth —can be chucked right into the simmering stew, shell and all. Crabs, of course, must be cracked. If you find shrimps, decapitate and devein them. Foraging farm country is just as adventurous, providing you can recognize a wild onion or potato (growing just beyond the farmer's fence). There's .nothing in the "rules" of a foraging quick-nic which forbids buying rather than finding. You can patronize a farmer's roadside stand —or, if he's willing, pluck some potluck right from his fields. Suppose your luck lapses and you don't forage much that's edible? We take along, in the ice chest, a few pounds of hot dogs. Diced or chunked they pinch-hit very well. Beach picnics combine swimming and games with tasty, informal meals. Beach Buffttt Quick-nics at the beach (ocean, lake, or river) are 75 percent play and 25 percent eating. Our rule is "play first, eat later." Wrap your individual portions in self-sealing plastic film, a surer guard against intruding sand than food containers. Use a camp cot as a stretcher carryall, piling your food- packed cooler and gear on top. Your cot carryall often saves the day. At meidtime, the cot serves as a table —an off-the-sand buffet. Planted upright in the sand, it also becomes an effective windscreen, shielding against chill breezes at dusk. If there are more exciting picnics than these four, our family has yet to discover them. But maybe yours will —^next time somebody suggests, "Let's have a picnic!" • Family Weekly, July 11,1965 15 Weeks Of Back Pain Now Relieved "After weeks of pain in my back and hips.
