, AIL EDITIONS * ^-» ' ' • . . ' < B-18 The Arizona Republic ftioentx, Sat., Sam 55,1978 « » *>, » K Stmssberg DeLuise gives credit to Dean HOLLYWOOD-THE SATURDAY SCOOPINGS; During James Coco interview, which filled this space a week ;o, we omitted a small confusion that arose momentarily iout how he could be playing a role in an unemployment ^'office when network releases said he'd be working as a t '"--————•»•—*""""•»- c i er k i n the lost and found deft iii||HHHBH!I partment of a New York bus »'•• Hj^H^^n^^HK line. Coco clarified it by noting * ^mimsL^^^^mm that he was in CBS-TV's "Colucci's Dept." (Friday nights next fall) and that Dom DeLuise, with whom he's often mistaken, was to star on NBC-TV's "Lotsa Luck" (Monday nights next fall) • as the clerk. "I used to get his (Coco's) phone messages and he told me the same thing," the very vibrant (like Coco) DeLuise told us when we chatted about his half- hour situation comedy,-another in the growing list of American Dom DeLuise copies of British video successes. "(It's the bawdy "On the Buses" in Blighty.) Dom, who believes his seven years as a regular with Dean Martin put him into contention for his own series ("I don't think I'd be :• "doing it without that exposure. I feel like he's my older brother"), almost didn't get the opportunity. "Carl Reiner (one of the series' actors) told me I'd have to audition because NBC brass didn't think I could do it. So I came to .the audition unshaven, wearing a cap, a dirty old windbreaker I use for fishing, carrying a bag of apples. The only thing I did wrong was do my funny laugh and Carl said not to do it because it would spoil things. So I didn't. ;And got the series. That's a laugh, huh?" (And he did his funny laugh.) "HOW ARE WE going to get away with the blue, stuff 'On the Buses' does? The situations here will be close but not exactly. We've done 9 shows, 2 of which are adapted directly from the English show. In one, I'll be trying to make out in the living room while my mother's coming down from upstairs. It's done delicately. In another, we're courageously carrying a toilet bowl through the streets to get it fixed. 'My mother (played by excellent character commedienne Kathleen Freeman) doesn't girl, Teresa —I don't know if we'll ever get to see her in the series —whom she, thinks is a bum. I say, 'Just because a girl was mugged a couple of times is no reason to hate her.? There are other less controversial plots, though." DeLUISE sees his character as a good man, likable, supporting a widowed mother, a married sister and her 'unemployable" hubby. "Stanley doesn't complain a lot but he •Could." It could be that the comedian-actor who admits he "watched Sid Caesar like a hawk, digested what he did and "re-did them," may utilize his Brooklyn-born background and Jhis Italian father's screaming and yelling to some advantage in the series. "Pop died at 81. He was a garbage man. _We had all kinds of pots, cans, typewriters, what-have-you which he sold for metal. I'm used to garbage. Where do I live now? In the Pacific Palisades area, a four-bedroom house, three TV sets, lots of fruit trees.
