During much of the afternoon, traders and stock exchange workers looked out their ffice windows as student antiwar protesters were confronted helmeted construction workers. Scuffling broke out, and at east 40 persons were treated 'or minor Injuries. At its lonchtime peak, demonstrators and onlookers numbered in the thousands. Police were still trying to clear the area late in the afternoon. Analysts described this pre. occupation with non-economic actors as typical, with investors apparently more concerned with Cambodian devel- pments and student unrest than the state of the economy. Many Investors were sitting on the sidelines awaiting Presi- lent Nixon's news conference Friday night and the massive march on Washington expected Saturday, analysts said. Averages The JNew -York Stock Exchange's index of some 1.20C common stocks closed off 0.24 at 43.61. Standard & Poor's 500- stock index was off 0.39 at 79.44.
