"As part of our programs for early identification of those children who may be in need of special services, this screening will help us in planning programs to meet all the individual needs of students now or in the future," said Superintendent Rosemary Lucas. "The screening is not to determine mental ability, but to identify those children who need special help whether it be now or when Great for just running around in RED WING SHOE STORE NEW HOURS MON.-THUtS. 10 A.M. - I ».M. W. 104 SAT. 9:30-5:00 3701 W, 95th St. EVERGREEN PARK 424-3311 Slate hearings on jet aircraft noise The House public works and transportation committee's aviation subcommittee will conduct public hearings starting March 22 on new legislation aimed at reducing jet aircraft noise in and around the nation's commercial airports, U.S. Rep John G. Fary (D-23rd) announced. Subcommittee chairman Glenn M. Anderson of California, principal author of the anti-noise bill, said the hearings would run for several days in order to give interested parties an opportunity to present their views. The bill, which sets a deadline of Jan. l, 1985, for airport and airline compliance with anti-noise regulations, would affect some 7,300,000 persons-- three per cent of the U.S. population-- who live in areas exposed to excessive aircraft noise. Under the terms of the bill, the introduction of quieter aircraft would bring relief to more than two million of these persons who live in heavily impacted areas. To protect the remainder, airport operators would be required to develop a noise abatement program which might involve acoustical shielding, restricted runway usage, the banning of certain noisy airplanes or curfews. The program would be submitted to the Federal Aviation administration for approval. "The long-term solution to this problem," said Fary, "involves the coordination and cooperation of the airport operator, local officials, the federal government and the airlines." Local officials, according to Fary, should be encouraged to define areas which will be exposed to severe aircraft noise and thn protect them through local planning and zoning. Noise sensitive functions, such as homes,, hospitals and schools, should not be in the flight path. If enacted, the bill would encourage airplanes to replace their old, noisy air- craft, such as the B-707 and DC-8, with new technologically advanced planes, which would be an estimated 30 per cent more fuel efficient than the older planes. The program would be financed with part of the present passenger tax, so that consumers would not be required to pay higher fares. Call 586-8800 ' Ask for an Ad Taker CERTIFIED PROVISION CO., INC.
