1 Fred Rogers ... with children, a relationship of complete trust OR By Eliot A. Daley (Associate pastor, First Presbyterian Church, Princeton, N.J.; ^ooblished in Iowa TV Magazine by 'special arrangement with the aythor and with Presbyterian Life Magazine) F RED ROGERS is probably the only Presbyterian ministerMn the world who can draw a crowd of 6,000 admirers and friends on a one-day visit to Boston. But then his flock numbers a million or more, with whom he spends a half-hour a day, five days a week. Fred Rogers' flock is the little people of the country — the 4-, 5-, and 6-year-olds — and he communicates with them through television. Indeed, he uses TV with a mastery no one else has yet approached. For him, the television set is like a telephone, to relate to and converse with myriad youngsters, each of whom is thoroughly convinced that Fred Rogers is speaking to him, directly and personally. He is in the vanguard of those who would use television as something other than an instrument to mesmerize the masses between commercials. Rogers is the creator, producer and star of "Misterog- ers' Neighborhood," WQED in Pittsburgh, Pa. It's seen five afternoons a week on about 120 stations of the National Educational Television network. [The program is shown at 5:30 p.m. daily on station KDIN-TV, Ch. 11, Des Moines, and will be carried by KIIN-TV, Ch. 12, when Iowa's second noncommercial station goes on the air next January. The program also is shown daily over the Nebraska Educational Television Network.] In outward appearance, "Misterogers" is not substantially different from what one might expect a children's program to be — a combination of puppets, songs and interesting objects, presided over by a genial host. But what Fred Rogers does so gently through his puppetry, music and conversation sets this program apart from anything else on television. For his young friends know that from the tjme Rogers comes on camera removing his coat and getting into his "play clothes," he is there just to be with them, to play with them, listen to them, and help them express a/id come to terms with the hopes and fears their dreams are made of. And like the rest of us, young children do not for long expose their thoughts and emotions in an intensive environment. They bring them forth only in a relationship of complete trust. Creation of that relationship is the ministry and accomplishment of Fred Rogers. "Misterogers' Neighborhood," in its entirety and in each specific part, aims quietly to elicit and develop (he feelings of those who watch it. Each program concentrates on one element of the child's feelings - pride in growth, fear of the dark, anxiety about a new baby, or perhaps fear of dying or bodily barm.
