Iff 5 shot in violence at Miami, Fla. Associated Press MIAMI, Fla. — Five persons were wounded in exchanges of gunfire between snipers and police and several buildings set ablaze yesterday as Miami was thrown into its third night of racial violence. The violence flared despite a strict curfew on nearly half of Miami and adjoining black areas of Dade County. Bullets struck a young man and woman as they stood on a balcony watching firemen battle a blaze at a firebombed store. Officials said neither had been wounded seriously and it was not clear who had fired the shots. Another youth was wounded by snipers in the Brownsville district, police said, where violence first erupted Monday over a dispute with a white grocer. Police said a third man and a 60-year-old woman also had been shot. Officials said it had not been determined if the shots were fired by snipers concealed in darkened buildings or by policemen. Firebombs were hurled at a half a dozen buildings, including a school and a soft drink bottling plant where thousands of wooden cases sent flames 50 feet in the air. Shotgun-carrying policemen were assigned to guard fire fighters after the firemen were bombarded with bottles and stones at one of the early fires. Heavily armed dquads of h e 1 m e t e d police officers swept through the troubled areas continually through the night. Forty-one persons were arrested during th night on various charges. Many residents in the predominantly black neighborhoods complained they were being teargassed in their homes by policemen spraying areas suspected of harboring snipers. The 5 persons were shot and 25 others injured before City Manager Melvin Reese declared a state of emergency and imposed an indefinite 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew. Dade County imposed similar restrictions from 8:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. in adjoining sections. Sheriff E. Wilson Purdy called on residents of the unincorporated area to control their youngsters he said were responsible for the violence. The order banned vehicular or pedestrian traffic, sale of liquor, and sale or purchase of firearms in a huge area embracing Brownsville, Liberty City and Coconut Grove black communities. "Everyone must be off the streets in the affected districts during those hours," a police spokesman said. Ignited by reports that a Negro housewife had been insulted in the Pic N Pay supermarket in the Brownsville section, the rioting began Monday night and grew more furious. Many automobiles were overturned and set ablaze. Dozens of stores were firebombed and looted. Jackson Memorial Hospital brought in 10 extra surgeons to deal with emergency cases. Rain, hail lash parts of Midwest Associated Press Driving rain and hail lashed parts of the Midwest yesterday and funnel clouds were sighted in northeastern North Dakota and north central Illinois in the afternoon. A tornado warning was issued for three Illinois counties and a tornado watch was in effect in parts of eastern and southern Iowa and north central Missouri. Funnel clouds were spotted west of Grand Forks, N.D., and at Elburn, 111., west of Chicago. Hail two inches in diameter battered Red Oak in southwestern Iowa and large hail and heavy rain hit Persia in the western part of the state. Cedar Rapids, Iowa, reported wind gusts up to 60 miles an hour and neighboring Logan, Iowa, was soaked by nearly an inch of rain. Showers dampened portions of states along the Eastern Seaboard.Other parts of the nation reported clear to partly cloudy skies and dry weather. ennetif A/AYR FIRRT ODAI ITY 9 ALWAYS FIRST QUALITY EMBRACEABLE TRIOS A FIRST AT PENNEYS YOUR CHOICE 100 BUYS ALL THREE RINGS Choose one of today's luxury'trios in diamonds and 14 K gold.
