(Sun staff photo by Angle Bracey) Houston, county cooperating Computer records system links health agencies in Harris County The first computerized maternity records system linking three government health agencies has been installed in Harris County to help prevent premature delivery, low brithweight and death of babies. The system is a unique joint venture developed by the city of Houston's Health and Human Services and Genera! Services Departments in cooperation with the Harris County Healtn Department, the Harris County Hospital District, and the Texas Gulf Coast Chapter of the March of Dimes. The Maternity Records System (MRS), which was scheduled to officially kick off on Aug. 25, will enable the three neaitn providers to have immediate access to critical patient information from all agencies through computer terminals. The March of Dimes Houston Campaign for Healthier Babies has made the system operational with a'51-13.000 grant, including funds from Houston Lighting & Power Company. The grant provides for hardware, software and dedicated phone lines for the City and County Health Departments and the Hospital District. The city of Houston General Services Department created the software and provided the mainframe computer and physicians from Baylor College of Medicine provided medical expertise. The majority of maternity patients who deliver at Jefferson Davis Hospital <JD> receive prenatal care in the City and County Health Departments' clinics. Prior to MRS, those patients had to hand carry their records between JD and their respective health clinics. As a result, there were no prenatal records for approximately 50 percent of city and county maternity patients who delivered at JD. The majority of those women either lost or misplaced their records prior to delivery. ; Returning hospital district information to the health clinics was an even greater problem: On the average. 60 percent of city and county maternity patients failed to return this information following delivery. Now. critical patient information can be exchanged between the hospital district and the city and county health departments through the city's mainframe computer. Maternity recprds assist health providers in recognizing various abnormal or dangerous conditions which require special care for the mother or infant. Failure to provide specialized and timely care for mothers and babies often results in costly cases of maternal and/or infant morbidity and mortality. Give yourself great entertainment.
