Economist Newspapers, Wednesday, March 16,1977 Helping Hand Section II Page l 586-8800 or GA 2-1212 , By KEN MILLER Helping Hand Editor ; I am dissatisfied with the rails and column installed by a contractor on my porch. The work was done the latter part of November and the rails and column are so rusty that my porch cement has rust also The firm that did the work said I should get a can of paint and paint these items myself I don't feel that I should have to do the paint work since I feel the firm did not do a good job I Chicago resides! The manager told us you do lot have a legitimate complaint. The rails and column had a primer coat on them, he said. He added that what happened to your rails and column is the same type'of thing that happens to a pair of shoes or a car after they are purchased. That is, shoes and a car need to be waxed or coated after awhile. h He also said that employes from the company were sent to you residence for other problems but not UK paint proowDt* i If yon are dissatisfied, yon can call the attorney general's Consumer Fraud and Protection division at 713-3581. ! * * * Last July I took a battery of exams as a requirement to get in Chicago's manpower program. Please give as a call and we will tell "Name change reports wrong,' Scouts say · The Boy Scouts have not 'changed their name, * Chicago area scout executive, Edward C. Jacobs «says the legal corporate *name of the Boy Scouts of "America has not changed vand that a misunderstand- Jing recently arose in the na- ·jtional press over the BSA's ^adoption of a new communi- ·^cative symbol using the .^words Scouting/USA, which ^was mistakenly reported as 1 the new name of the 67- 'year-old Boy Scouts of "America. " -The official name of the *local council will continue -to bf 'ie Chicago Area council, Boy Scouts of America. The council will gradually incorporate the symbol on its printed material, signs and other places where a strong, recognizable identification is required. The BSA's new red and white symbol includes a contemporary version of the traditional BSA fleur-de-lis, plus the new communicative name, Scojiting/USA. Together, these elements more appropriately reflect the current broadened scope of the Boy Scouts of America, Jacobs said. . Use of the Scouting/USA symbol began last summer, but full implementation is expected to take several years, said Jacobs. The traditional fleur-de-lis of Scouting will continue in a modernized form, Jacobs explained, but badges and insignia denoting advancement and office will not be changed. Also not changing will be the three symbols for the Cub Scout, Scout and Explorer phases of the total BSA program The "new look" for Scouting/USA will help clear up confusion related to the youth and adult leaders Scouting is committed to serve, according to the findings of a five-year study Jacobs explained Scouting, serves young men and women as well as boys, and that the word "boy" was dropped from the Scout phase of the program several years ago PLASTIC SLIP COVERS Factory To You. My husband is ill with terminal lung cancer and my income is the only money we have to support our son. My husband has not worked since last October, so it has been pretty rough to make ends meet. The Social Security administration has told us my husband is ineligible because he has not paid into the fund for the last five years We are waiting to hear about possible benefits from his job as a custodian and from the Veterans administration on a disability claim. I have also tried to obtain food stamps but was told I was not entitled to them. If we could receive food stamps, it would be a great help. I would appreciate any help you can give me. Chicago resident We told yon it is Important that you apply for everything that you might be eligible to receive from the government, due to your situation. Specifically, food stamps are given to those persons who qualify for them based on their monthly income and the number of persons in the family. We spoke to an employe from the state's inquiry division of the Public Aid department. We asked that the em- ploye speak to you personally and review your case with yon. We then called you and told you to call the employe. UK state employe also pointed out that yon can appeal an application for food stamps if yon are denied. * * * A male Doberman dog that a Beverly resident is trying to locate has disappeared from the Animal Welfare league, after the league picked the dog up on an exit ramp on 1-57 about the middle of last week I have learned that the dog was taken to the league's Chicago Ridge kennel, but the possible owner of the dog was not permitted to look through the kennel when she visited it Friday I also learned that the dog was transported to the league's Wabash kennel When the possible owner visited the Wabash kennel on Saturday, the dog was not there. Where is the dog? Can you help find it? Jackie Hill, Beverly Pet Return Allen Glisch, director of the league, said the league's veterinarian examined the dog and said the animal should be euthanized. The dog has been put to sleep, said Glisch. He added that anyone that visits the Chicago Ridge or Wabash kennel during the proper hours and Is courteous Is allowed to look through UK kennel. We told Urn what you stated concerning this person being unable to took through the kennel In Chicago Ridge. Glisch, however, saU that did not happen. He also said that a city ordinance states the league must wait seven days.before putting a dog to sleep after the league finds a dog or the league can euthanize the dog on recommendation of the veterinarian. Glisch said the dog was lost two or three months ago. » * * Could you please help me with this problem 7 I had an accident on 95th and Ridgeland in Oak Lawn on Oct. 27, 1972. The woman that hit me struck my car in the back and caused over $1,000 damage. She did not have any insurance so we had to go to court. She was supposed to pay $50 per month, with one-third going to my lawyer, until the damage was completely paid off. The problem is that she paid for only eight months. The last check I received was Nov. 7,1974. I have called the lawyer and wrote him around five times last year but he never writes or calls back. Could you get in touch with him and find out what is going on? Worth resident We got in touch with your lawyer who told ns the problem with collecting the remainder of the money b that be has been unable to find the other woman's attorney to find out who has posted bond for the woman. Posting bond blocks the ability to collect OK remaining cash from the woman, your attorney explained. Meanwhile, your attorney has gone to court and cut this woman's credit off. The lawyer has been writing the secretary of state's office to try to find out who the bonding company is. We will also contact the secretary of state's office and stay hi touch with you. * * * Readers are invited to send their questions and problems to Helping Hand, Economist Newspapers, SKI S.
