Mark Harmon (of NBC's "St. Elsewhere") and Kirstie Alley, who replaces Shelley Long on the NBC series "Cheers" in the fall, star in the teen film "Summer School." Sometime in the fall. Justine Bateman of "Family Ties" will star in "Sweet Little Rock and Roller." produced by TV soap king Aaron Spelling. In October. Shelley Long and Corbin Bernsen the womanizing attorney on NBCs "L.A. Law." appear in "You Again." At Christmas. Tom Selleck and Ted Danson star in a remake of the French farce "Three Men and a Baby." "Bright Lights, Big City." based on the best-selling novel, is Ms.J'f Daily Breakfast and Lunch Specials OwMT/lpVlt* HjCI IUZ BefiRRiRf MiRtiy Ail- 24: Mme in yor orttr WNAY-fRIMY M.LSMWS KFME E:BO P.M. rtl)H35-3:!5.5:20-7:35-9:« • •T«TO12:4-3:10.5:25-7:40.?;55 429-5709 2811 Market St. •mBMPmU(ft)MQ.3.iO-5 10-7-iqc Check PlITTGUIOf for she* tmxt tUtal vitl SOTMI, ML NOVWOrOUT Check niTrCWOe tor sho* tunes r.Vot PUTT GtHOC for show t, CANTBUYME A UNIVERSAL Retease CTTT STWIPOt, LOVE Chect fUTTStHOC for ifto* nmnr OSI«WI103K8l)!VV5!A «a». ..•.;. ®mi touosto* ficws Cluck H/nstlUK f* sin* tints 5 fun to be a vampire HEL°ST BOYS • slated for February release, with Michael J, Fox of NBC's "Family Ties" in the lead. What makes this movie invasion so unusual is that it is virtually unprecedented. Until 10 years ago, the conventional wisdom was that people wouldn't pay for what they could see free on TV. Proof of that were major TV stars who had flopped on the big screen: Mary Tyler Moore U970's "Change of Habit" with Elvis Presley), Lucille Ball ("Mame," 1974) and Carol Burnet ("Chu Chu and the Philly Flash," 1981), among others. Some of those TV stars did have some film successes. Moore garnered good reviews and an Oscar nomination for "Ordinary People" (i960), but her film career stalled after that. Burnett appeared in 1961's commercially successful "The 6-2144 »1 TOMSELLECK Four Seasons," but her other features ("A Wedding" in 1978 and "H.E.A.L.T.H." in 1979 were disappointments. John Travolta became a superstar with "Saturday Night Fever" (1977) and "Grease" (1978), then starred in a string of mediocre productions. Tom Selleck. who's had his share of film hits and bombs, believes the difference between a successful transition and failure is timing. If the public can't see you for free anymore, they will pay to see you in films, "James Garner had a great movie career and Steve Me- It's Time For Back To School! SHELLEY LONG Queen certainJv did," comments Selleck. "Watch old 'Twilight Zones,' and you see Robert Redford! But those people all finished their TV commitments and went into features." If Selleck is right, his timing for "Three Men and a Baby" is near perfect; next season is his last on "Magnum, P.I.." and it is rumored that Selleck will only make eight appearances in the CBS series. Today, not all TV stars who try 1 making the TV-to-fllm transition succeed. One theory' holds that the public will only accept a TV' star who plays the same kind of role in films. Michael J. Fox triumphed in "Back to the Future" (1965) and "Th« Secret of My Success" (1987) by basically reprising his Alex Keaton character. When he tried a darker role in the recent "Light of Day," he bombed. For the same reason. Fox may also have problems with "Bright Lights, Big City," in which he plays a cocaine-snorting New Yorker. Ted Danson was slow getting out of the gate with "Just Between Friends" and "A Fine Mess" (both 1986), which may have been too far afield from his series' gentle character comedy. But Danson's "Cheers" peer Shelley Long made a big $pl«jh in "Outrageous Fortune" (1W7). Stephen J. Cannell, creator of "The Rockford FMea" and "The A-Te«nV' believes only sitcom Man can make It big at the movtM. "I can't think of a single dramatic TV actor of the current crop who's made It AH a dramatic film actor, Comcdte* are very big In film* these days, and TV is being uMd as a son oC farm team for caattng," Cannell •ays.
