8. JOURNAL— Saturday Morning. April 5, 1975 Artist :,.-• -*, Y% . Through Jewelry, Art B} MARY AJJCB DIERS Avalanche-Journal Staff Avt is n means of communication for Toni W. Thomason— and ho has much to suy. Drawing on the world.he sees around 'him and the inner thoughts of his own "fanlnsiz- ing" for inspiration, Thomason creates jewelry with a hint, at traditional styling strongly influenced by his own brand of contemporary design. The Albuquerque, N.M., artist jeweler visited Lubbock Thursday for a mini showing of his jewelry designs at The Museum of. Texas Tech University. Some ot his work remains on displaj in; the museum shop. Thomason has been designing contemporary jewelry for 15 yoars and also has worked as a painter and sculptor. During his teen years, Thorn •05011 served,. ?n apprenticeship under:a Nayajo silversmith. AT liTpuglv 'he is a quarter Chero U«e Indian* 'and proud of hi. heritage, Thomason's \vork doe., not bear a guttural stamp. ; '"pood design ;is universal—i can be appreciated anywhere in the world," the artist said. Tin is his goal. Thomason's creations ar usually made from gold, silve and platinum, but "everythin from river pebbles to dia iiionds" may be used to en hance a design.. [As the artist explained, really try not to limit my materials too much. I try to create the concept of the design an the concept of the medium want to do it in at the sam time." [The honesty of a medium important to him. "I don't tr to! use a material in a way was never meant to be used, lomason said. But this doesn't eliminate ex- erimentation on the artist's art; Although gold is a favor- .e medium, Thomason has ex- erimented with platinum, 'Well he said is "basically mis- nderstood." In the past, go!d tylc jewelry has been made 'Om platinum, but Thomason elievcs the strong metal has etler uses. He has been expe- imenting with platinum in fill- ree. The New Mexico artist uses echnkiues ranging from the an- ! ient to the modern. One of his lethods. tuff casting, involves the carving of a design into tuf- a-stone. Molten metal is xiured into the resulting mold. When designing jewelry, Tiomason considers the weara- ility of tlie piece and how it vill enhance its owner, the quality of materials used and sheer artistic design. Most of lis designs have symbolic meaning. '•,••'• . . As a child, Thomason • fantasized that the messas and buttes of the southwest are really stumps of a growing, flowering earth. From this fantasy has come his "Growing Earth" jewelry series. Much of Thomason's work is done in the studio of his old, rambling Spanish home in Albuquerque. He displays his jewelry designs in his nearby gallery —'"which is about the size of a large closet," the jeweler said. as NURSERY SPRING PLANTIN' TIME ,..< UNCLE WOLFE SAYS: TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE TREMENDOUS SAVINGS ON FINE NURSERY STOCK AT FANTASTIC CLEARANCE PRICES.
