-I2.B-.LUBBQCK AVAIANCHE-JQURNAL— Friday Evening. April 4. 1975 Curate Ends Desert Trek For Charity LONDON (UP1) — Now that '.he's finished pushing his Chinese wheelbarrow 2,000 miles across the Sahara Desert, the Rev. Geoffrey Howard can tuck into his heart's desire —a .chocolate cake. "I'd have given anything for '.a huge cake," Howard said as ho returned from pushing a .large wheelbarrow across the "burning desert. It took him 90 days and nights. Howard said he did it "for charity, and to prove .himself. "It had never been done .ibcfore," said the 30-year-oJd curate of St. Luke's Anglican church in Manchester. . Howard started in Algeria •Just before Christmas and finished in Kano, northern Nigeria, 3ast month. He flew home Tuesday to a huge '\vclcome from his wife, Joan, '28, and children Susie, ,'j, and -Sam, 2. British Flag Dies . He made a demonstration run with his large-wheeled barrow, a contraption of two boxes painted with bright stripes on each side of the wheel, and a British flag flying bravely ovc-r it. Apart from my wive and •kids, the thing I missed most was chocolate cake," the Rev. -Howard said. "I'd have given anything for a huge cake. That, or a Jarge pot of strawberry -jam. " "I was using up so much energy every day and I was desperate for something sweet. I got fed up with eating sugar." Two British army men trailed him in a Land Rover, but were •allowed to give him food and water only at agreed points. .Chocolate cake was not in their stock. . ^ Cruel Desert "The worst moment was 'when I had just covered 30 miles of soft sand," the bespectacled curate said. "I came over the top of a ridge and saw the most awful .sand dune stretching for 200 yardr. I just slumped over the whee.bamnv and started to laugh. "My whole body was shaking with laughter, but inside I. was crying. I couldn't believe the .desert could be so cruel." • That- moment came on his longest stretch between water holes —253 miles of scorching 5'ands, with the temperature above 100 degrees. Howard had bnly a couple 'of pints of water -left. ; "I knew that just ahead was a small mining community," he •said. "But when I got there 1 thought I was seeing a mirage. The miners —350 of them and all Europeans —came out to ineet me with champagne." UAM-VH, Mo. (AP) — It was one of thousands of letters Greg Dalton has received but cannot read.
