A lazy scholar's dream™IQ pills Phoenix, Tues., Nov. 4, 19S9 Dili i H O C i jflepubllc 29 ; gfet yt, rokm ,r United Press International i NEW YORK - By this Itime next century, school teachers may spend more itirns dispensing pills than >ihey do at blackboard or lec- 'tern. I You see, if promises along 'the cellular biology trail !come true, there will be a •battery of IQ pills — make- 'you-smart chemicals pack- •jaged in paintbox-colored pills 'and capsules. ' Occurring in. some laborato- •ry experiments with animals ^already, this tinkering with 'cells seems to have capabilities of making weak ones ;strong' and may even rein- 'force abnormal ones with ;normal characteristics. 6 " t These animal experiments ^suggest that the time could •come when a person learns ;by injection — or pill popping. Maybe even by transfu- 'sion. It's not as far-fetched as you might think. Scientists working in mental health have crude and experimental versions of such chemical sparkplugs — promising enough to continue research at a swift tempo. The late Dr. Thomas Rivers, when he was medical director of the National Foundation March of Dimes, told me that manipulation of cells and even viruses will benefit man greatly. Researchers conferring at a meeting of the Manfred Sakel Foundation in New York, were excited about manipulation of cellular biology in a way to help the retarded. The possibility of "learning by injection" is posed by Father Jerrold M. Novotney, special assistant to the dean of the graduate school of education at the University of California at Los Angeles. In a report in the Catholic "School Journal he predicts the eventual use of pills to speed up the learning process — if one doesn't want a transfer of knowledge from donor to receiver by injection. "Animal experiments have suggested that the time may come when a combination of substances extracted from one individual and injected into another could allow the recipient to gain access tb the learning possessed by the donor,'' he said. When that day the lazy scholar's always dreamed of dawns, it'll be nice to have that speedy-learning pill. It will be needed if the rest of what Father Novotney predicts comes true. He sees school starting at 30 months of age! School at 30 months? Can't you see it now. This third- grader is writing the story of his life. It starts: "I had a very happy childhood. It ended when I was two and a half years old. They put me In school." i Language reform jVIENNA (AP) - Under a new language reform program, Bulgarian children will be taught Russian beginning in the first grade, the Bulgarian news agency BTA reported. Classes in Russian now start in the fifth grade. SECRETARIES MEET Maricopa County Legal Secretaries meet on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Smuggler's Inn restaurant, Park Central shopping center, to hear B.
