Gronola bars not as nutritious as believed By CONSUMER REPORTS If you offer your children a snack of rolled oats, they may thing you're pretty weird. But offer a granola bar, and you may get an entirely different reaction. Granola bars are essentially rolled oats that have been combined with other tasty ingredients such as nuts, raisins, chocolate chips, apples, peanut butter or honey. And for many parents, they're preferable to ordinary candy bars because they appear to offer a nutritious and apparently natural food instead of a snack with lots of empty calories. But the editors of Penny Power — a Consumer Reports magazine for kids — say that you may be surprised when you learn what the bars actually have to offer. The editors recently took a closer look at some of the more popular granola products. One common misconception is that granola bars contain almost no sugar. The fact is they do — and. in some cases, almost as much per ounce as a regular candy bar. The total sugars content in 21 bars was measured and compared against the total sugars content in Snickers and Mr. Goodbar candy bars, i Granola bars may contain several different types of "sugars." such as granulated sugar, honey, corn syrup, dextrose, molasses and brown-sugar syrup.) Since the granola bars (at about an ounce per ban are smaller than the candy bars, the measurement was based on one- ounce portions of each product. A one-ounce piece of Snickers bar ( about half a bar) had three teaspoons of sugar. Two types of Nature Valley Granola Clusters and one Nature Valley Dandy Bar had about as much. Most of the other granola bars had from about 2 to 24 teaspoons of sugar per ounce — that's about as much as a Mr. Goodbar. Only the peanut butter A&P Chewy Granola Bar and the chunky nut and raisin Quaker Chewy Granola Bar contained a lot less sugar per ounce than either of the two candy bars tested. Are granola bars a safe snack for teeth? Penny Power's editors say that depends on the bars' ingredients. The chewy bars and those with raisins tend to stick to your teeth. They provide a nice long meal for the germs in your mouth that cause cavities. (You can reduce the risk of cavities somewhat if you brush your teeth immediately after eating the sweets.) Penny Power's editors say that the bottom line for granola bars is that they aren't a low- sugar or low-calorie snack. CUT YOUR COOLING COST IN HALF! Dr. Gott Sunday, April 27, 19* S-A Gough syrup can aid conception DEAR DR. GOTT - I am 30, married and have a 5-year-old son. We've been trying for three years to have another child. After many tests, my doctor put me on Clomid and progesterone for four months. I still can't get pregnant. Now he's suggesting that I take Robitussin cough syrup to get pregnant. Have you ever heard of this? DEAR READER — It sounds peculiar, but Robitussin can help some women become pregnant. The cough mixture contains guaifenesin, a substance that thins muscus. If your cervical canal secretes mucus that is so thick that it prevents penetration by sperm, Robitussin can reduce mucous viscosity and permit fertilization to take place. Please don't become alarmed and think, as one of my patients did, that you could get pregnant just by drinking cough syrup; there's more to it than that. DEAR DR. GOTT - I am a 12- year-old girl. I was born with a shallow hip socket. Could I pass it on to my family? Could I pop it out of place if I did splits? DEAR READER — Some hip conditions are congenital or inherited. In many patients, stress — like doing a split — could cause a dislocation. I suggest that you discuss your hip problem with your doctor. He or she can give you the best advice for your particular condition. DEAR DR. GOTT — Is vanilla purchased in Central America or Mexico safe to use? DEAR READER - The U.S. Exhibit of color photograghs set MINNEAPOLIS iAP> - The exhibition. "On the Line: The New Color Photojournalism," is on view at the Walker Art Center through June 1. The exhibition contains 10 photographs by each of 12 photographers who work primarily in color for newspapers and magazines. The center says their work "bridges the gap between 'high art' photography and news photojournalism." Lets dress up Baytown Please Don't Litter! BAYTOWN CLEAN CITY COMM. Other countries are not so picky. If, when abroad, you purchase vanilla extract that has been made in the United States, you are safe, providing the container has not been opened. On the other hand, vanilla packaged and sold in a foreign country may contain contaminants. Although the changes of becoming sick from such a product are unlikely, I'd advise caution in using foreign edibles that are packaged and sold in foreign countries. DEAR DR. GOTT — When I was a baby, a doctor told my mother that 1 would have to take thyroid pills my whole life. Now, many years later, I'm told I don't need them. However, I have a couple of lumps on my throat, near my jaws. Is this anything to get concerned about? DEAR READER — Probably not. Doctors know a great deal more about thyroid problems than they did years ago. You may not need the thyroid pilis. Your doctor can obtain a blood test that will indicate whether < not you are deficient in thyn i hormone. In addition, a physician can determine if the lumps you describe are in the thyroid gland (and could be kept small by using thyroid pills) or are in the surrounding tissue. They want no part of church themselves, but think that the young folks should have a good moral base on which to build their lives and that old people are just studying final exams. What about all those years in between? What about those times when you just can't cope with your job or serious personal problems? To whom do you turn when a member of your family has died? There is never a time when we don't need God. We always need His strength. His forgiveness. His wisdom. His presence and His love.
