Policeman fired in Evansdale By A STAFF WRITER EVANSDALE, IA. - An Evansdale policeman was fired Tuesday, five days before his previously announced resignation was to take effect. Patrolman Hick Irons, 22, was dismissed by Evansdale Mayor Ron Nichols who said Irons had left the Waterloo suburb of 5,000 persons unprotected without notice Monday morning. New Yorker looks at Iowa farm life By A STAFF WRITER GRANGER, IA. - Fred Richmond, a self-made millionaire and Democratic congressman from Brooklyn, N.Y., leaned into the cow and tried milking it. He didn't get any milk the first couple of pumps. "C'mon, honey," he implored, then quipped: "At this rate, the cow will be ready for her next batch." Richmond, accompanied by Fifth District Congressman Tom Harkin of Ames, spent the day on the Bob Geneserfarm near here, milking cows, feeding cattle, hogs and chickens and discussing farm problems The discussion of the problems facing persons in agriculture states such as Iowa was one oi the main reasons Harkin and his fellow Democratic congressman Berkley Bedell of Spirit Lake brought the urbane New York' politician to Iowa. Richmond heard about some of the problems Monday when he worked on the Frank Bur yanek farm near Hawarden in Bedell's Sixth District, and more of them Tuesday on the Geneser farm where Harkin also took his turn milking cows and helping with farm chores. Richmond, curious as to what lappens to the milk, was told hat it provides milk for the eneser family, butter and some ce cream. What is unused is fed o hogs as a supplement, Geneser said. Geneser, told Richmond that virtually aU^of-the work on his 320-acre farm, about four miles northwest of Granger, is done >y him and his family. family Farms Richmond said in an interview hat he "has a great deal of respect" for the family farmer and will do all he can to save hem. Richmond said his weeklong swing through four midwestern states is designed to give him a firsthand look at family farms and help him understand technical agricultural bills that come up in Congress. For example, he said a bill relating to insecticides and ungicides is scheduled to come up in the House Agricultural Committee, of which he, Harkin and Bedell are members, next week. "The USDA (U.S. De- >artment of Agriculture) is tell- ng us that farmers are against i," he said. "But out here armers are not against it." Richmond said that 40 per of the average wage earned by people in his district Is spent on food and that he wants to work to keep food prices down. Notes Crop Noting Iowa's drought-stricken corn crop, Richmond said that he didn't foresee much of 3 bumper crop for the nation his year "no matter what the Department of Agriculture says." Of his visit to central and o r t h w e s t Iowa, Richmond said, "It provides me the ability to see and talk to farmers and that makes it easier to talk to consumers." Richmond, 50, represents about a half-million people in a n i n e-s q u a r e-mile area in Brooklyn. He said he represents in Congress every ethnic group that is represented in the United Nations. Although Richmond is at traded more to opera than farm ing, he is not unfamiliar with farming. He has worked and lived on a friend's farm in Mary land "during the r past 25 years, he said. Geneser said he isn't sure what the visit will mean to Richmond. "The thing about it s that he probably will see that [here's a little more to farming ban throwing something in the ground and reaping a harvest." Harkin noted that it's essen- ial -that Richmond see the ood chain firsthand, "from the armer's end as well as the big- city consumer's." Harkin and Richmond were ed a noontime meal of food hat was obtained from the Geneser farm. There was baked -chicken, potatoes and gravy, corn, tomatoes, deviled iggs, milk and strawberries. Meets Farmers Afterward, about a dozen Farmers from the area met with the two congressmen to discuss farm problems. Harkin is scheduled to visit lichmond's district in Brooklyn ater this year to get a first land look at urban problems. • Richmond founded and head- id a company headquartered in Vew York City that manufatf ures such varied products as caskets, electric motors, plastic molding, machine tools and paper-making machines.
