Nancy goes from ice skating to TV scries Nancy Foi 'By PENNY P. ANDERSON . The silver icreesn of yesteryear was filled with leading ladles plucked from chorus lines by enterprising producers and catapulted to star- once In a while history does repeat itself. An alert producer occasional* dom. Wasn't It? Hollywood doesn't often work that way any more, but ly will "discover" an ingenue and offer her a legend-like "break." Or, at least a role in a TV series. "Temperature's Rising" regular Nancy Fox wasn't in a chorus line when Hollywood : producer Bill Asher discovered her. She was in a Clo- seup toothpaste commercial. "My mouth's still on the • box," she says proudly. Asher, then producer of the "Bewitched" series, urged the Houston-born actress to , leave, New < York and try Hoi- Nancy, however, accepted the advice with reluctance. "The whole idea of Hollywood kind of scared me," she admits. "1 kept thinking, 'Meek, why go all the way to California to be disappointed. It'll cost a fortune to fly out there when I can stay right here in New York and be disappointed for free.'" Fear of disappointment was unwarranted. Since Nancy arrived, apple-cheeked and wide-eyed a year ago, Bill Asher has kept her working. During her initial visit, Asher was filming a "Bewitched" episode which included a role for an ice-skater. It just so happened Nancy had been a competitive figure skater. "Heck, I said 'Yes' before I realized that by taking the role I would turn professional. I guess it didn't much matter, anyhow, since I wasn't skating competitively anymore." After that came the role of whimsical nurse Ellen Turner in the Asher-produced "Temperature's Rising." Nancy Seems a delightfully disarming youngster with an innocent air and wide blue eyes. She has already, however, put in an. impressive tour of duty as an entertainer. Acting is actually a second career for Nancy. At age 17, she was winning figure skat* 'ing competitions. "I never got as far as the Olympics or anything like that," she says dismissing her accomplishments s e 1 f *c o n- sciously with a wave of her hand. "But I did compete in the national championships." She was also the Midwestern Figure Skating Champion one year. "As soon as 1 started acting, the skating just didn't seem important anymore." For the slender, home-spun blonde, a TV studio is much more enjoyable than the rink. "If you want to be good and successful as a skater you have to practice six to eight hours a day. Every day. That's what t used to do. It was really hard, hard work. "What made it even more difficult was the fact that there is only one winner. The pressure is just terrible. "An actress might lost a commercial or a role in a series, but there's always the chance that another will come along. You don't have that chance in skating competition."
