Television Ratings month livens up networks By STEVE CAMPBELL Staff Writer If it seems that your usual TV fare has suddenly become un i a a Analysis teristi a 1 1 refresh ing let it startle you If your soap opera in recent days has become adventure packed get too excited And if tired of hearing WGME and WCSH TV tell you that received an Emmy award let it bother you After all ratings month and the networks are scrambling for your attention our times a year local televi sion affiliates are rated on their performance About 500 house holds in the viewing market most of them in Maine and New Hamp shire are keeping track on what they are watching In the end the books are com piled by Arbitron and Nielsen rat ing services to determine what shows were hot and which were not To the local TV stations the rating books spell money They are a circulation guide to show adver tisers that it is worth their money to buy a commercial They also supply the advertiser with demographic information about who the show appeals to With this in hand com mercial rates are set or example if Wheel of or tune spins a 20 rating then a half minute commercial would cost 20 multiplied by a flat rate of say $25 to arrive at the final price of $500 Of course there are several other variables that come into play at arriving at a price National programs are obviously more expensive than local ones Commercials in the winter and summer are usually more expen sive than those in the fall or spring Half hour programs often cost more than hour programs And when demand increases prices increase But nevertheless ratings talk They also serve as a guide for programmers to determine which ones they should save and which should be killed Local network officials say al though there is increased hype dur ing the rating periods reoruary May July ana oiovemoer gooa programming must continue throughout the year in order to keep the viewers watching "We try to put our best foot forward but we don't
