NEW YORK - Running ~ back Brian Piccolo of the Chi* cago Bears, saluted recently <• by teaflimate Gale Sayers as ; "a friend who speels out the » word courage 24 hours a day * every day of his life", died * yesterday of cancer at the * age of 26. * Survivors include his widow, "[ Joy, jyid three small daugh- » ters. Funeral arrangements * were incomplete. * Death came at Memorial (Hospital for Cancer and Al*lied Diseases to the coura- *geous athlete who was an unspectacular football player Ibut left a lasting mark be; cause of his bravery in the \face of the dread killer. > * "He was so young to die, -with a future that held so 'much for him," said George *Halas, the owner of the Chi- .cago Bears. "But Brian made ;the most of the brief 26 years Balloted to him, and he will .not be forgotten." * One of those who will not * forget the former Wake Forrest star who was the coun- Hry's top ground gainer and leading scorer in 1964. is Saylers, who Piccolo began room- ung with when the Bears decided on a policy of integrat- ,;ed rooming three years ago. v Just three weeks 'ago, at a ^dinner in New York at which Sayers was honored as pro football's Most Courageous ^Athlete for his comeback ,*from a knee injury, Sayers Jiad the audience in tears r with an emotional speech in •which .he paid tribute to Pic- <colo. * "You flatter me by giving jne this award," said Sayers, ;"But I tell you here and now ,,that I accept it, for Brian Pic- Jcplo. Brian Piccolo is the •man of courage who should ^receive the award. It is mine tonight. It is Brian Piccolo's tomorrow. ; "I love Brian Piccolo and I'd like all of you to love him <too. When you hit your knees to pray tonight please ask ,God to love bim too." " Sayers -credited Piccolo with being one of the people Who had urged him on as he made his comeback and asked the audience "to compare his courage with that which I am supposed to possess. "Think of Brian and his courage and fortitude shown in the months since last November, in and out of hospi- jtals, hoping to play football ligain but not too sure at any time what the score was or might be. Brian Piccolo has never given up. . . "He has the heart of a giant and that rare form of courage that allows him to kid himself and his opponent — cancer. He has ,the mental attitude that makes me proud to have a friend who spells out the word courage 24 hours a day every day, of his life." ..,. Piccolo signed as a free agent with the Bears, and made many contributions. Piccolo took over for the final five games of the season and carried 76 times for 269 yards, finishing with 450 yards — the best of his career. He played during the 1969 season until Nov. 23 when he was declared out of a game against Baltimore because of a cough. The cough turned out to be cancer, and Piccolo underwent a 4%-hour operation at the end of last November for the removal of a malignant tumor in his chest. Three months later he underwent farther treatment and this month again returned to Memorial Hospital. "At first the word malignancy scared the heck out of me," said Piccolo. "But 'the doctor was just fabulous. He talked to me a lot — even before the first operation — and made me understand. He told me the alternatives and what could happen. "By the time he was done I was saying, 'Oh, boy, let's go.' Piccolo said he felt the public needed that kind of education to fight the battle with cancer.
