Muskie set to address UPI photo by Gene Willman Stella Young today and during World War I convention BANGOR (UPI) Secretary of State Edmund Muskie will address Democratic Party con vention this weekend upon returning from his first overseas diplomatic mission President appointment of Muskie to the top State Department post will boost the presi support at the convention state party Chair man Barry Hobbins said Tuesday The convention will send 22 delegates to the Democratic National Convention in New York this August and Hobbins expects Carter will receive 12 of them Muskie met in Brussels Young picked up the World War I steel helmet lifted it to her head and wriggled the strap under her chin "They asked for volunteers to go to she recalled "I was young and adventuresome I really know what I was getting into "We allowed out the door without our helmets and gas masks in rance on account of the shelling and the mustard On the couch in her sunshine filled Maine cottage was a photo of Stella freckle faced and 20 years old wearing the helmet and holding a tub of home made doughnuts The picture was taken 64 years ago of the original "doughnut of World War I The Everett Mass native joined the war effort as a Salvation Army vol unteer in 1918 and was sent to the Metz front in rance She was stationed a mere 3 miles behind the front lines in the heavily shelled village of Ansuville It was there serving refreshments to weary soldiers returning from a 30 day stay in the trenches that Miss Young was christened the "doughnut "I remember it was very cold and bleak weather really said the petite silver haired woman "The boys were coming back all wet and full of mud "One of the girls said try and make some "I really take full Miss Young who was in charge at the time made the decision to go ahead with the doughnut scheme The first batch was made with makeshift tools the top of a baking soda jar cut the dough and a camphor ice tube punc tured holes in the middle Later a combat photographer asked her to pose with a steel tub full of fresh ly made doughnuts and the "doughnut picture caught the fancy of the nation It soon appeared on postcards and on the sheet music cover of "My Doughnut a song dedicated to Salvation Army volunteers After the armistice she spent nine months in rance accompanying the di vision to Germany before returning home She returned to Europe during World War II supervising an American club at Burton Stacey England In 1956 after 40 years of volunteer service she retired to "take life but now 84 and a brigadier in the Salva tion Army she continues to do vol unteer work at area hospitals She has a stack of letters from World War I soldiers who heard her speak on a Boston radio program and remem bered the "doughnut "Those doughnuts and wrote a Massachusetts veteran "still arouse my ister Andrei Gromyko His schedule then calls for a direct flight to this northern Maine city' where he will attend his daughter graduation from the University of Maine at Orono Saturday before speaking to the convention later in the day Hobbins said There will be 2240 delegates at the convention who were elected at about 500 non binding cau cuses Capitol in Washington Monday Sale of WCSH radio awaits CC approval WCSH radio oldest radio station is being sold to a subsidiary of Eastman Radio Inc of New York City it has been learned Mary Rines Thompson president of the Maine Broadcasting System which owns WCSH said Tuesday a sales agreement had been signed by Maine Broadcasting and the Eastport Broadcasting Co No purchase price was disclosed and the sale is subject to approval by the ederal Communica tions System The sales agreement comes less than two months after Maine Broadcasting signed a similar agreement to sell WLBZ radio in Bangor to the Acton Corp of Acton Mass Mrs Thompson would not comment on the rea sons for the two sales but she said the stations were making money The company continues to own WLBZ TV in Bangor and WCSH TV in Port land but Mrs Thompson did not say whether there were any plans to expand the television operations Maine Briefs Prison lockdown continues THOMASTON The lockdown at the Maine State handle the pa tient load well into the 1980s but not enough of the new doctors are setting up practice where needed most in rural northern Maine one conclusion in a report by the Mental Health
